Troy Aikman Doesn’t Believe Cowboys HC Opening Will Be Coveted Job

Change is on the way. On Monday it was announced that the Dallas Cowboys have parted ways with their HC. So now begins the search for a new coach to build a winning culture and usher in a new era. Problem is… it is not a highly sought after position. At least according to one former player. Troy Aikman told ESPN that he doesn’t believe the Cowboys HC opening will be a coveted job.

Troy Aikman would know. He spent over a decade as a player for Dallas. Winning three Super Bowl championships with the Cowboys; in the silver, blue and star uniform from 1989-2000. But Aikman’s era is a long cry from how things are now. Yet, the Cowboys football history is still very rich.

Despite how they have looked in more recent times on the field; the Dallas Cowboys actually hold the NFL record for most consecutive winning seasons with 20 from 1966 to 1985. During that time, they reached the playoffs 18 times, won 13 NFC East championships; and reached the Super Bowl five times.

They have also made the playoffs 36 times, an NFL record shared with the Green Bay Packers, and have the eighth-best playoff record in terms of win–loss percentage with 36 wins and 31 losses. The team has had 40 winning seasons, 19 losing seasons, and 6 seasons with as many wins as losses.

With such a storied legacy and history, you would think anyone would be attracted to be in the Dallas football realm. Especially, since the Cowboys are a franchise that has all the resources needed to put together a winning team. Such as state-of-the-art facilities, lucrative media, top notch branding and a flush of available financial backing. So then, what is the issue?

According to Aikman, it is how the franchise is being currently run. Troy mentions that Jerry Jones does not allow head coaches the freedom to make choices or decisions “on their own terms.” On Monday Night Countdown Aikman remarks,

“I love the Dallas Cowboys. I played there for 12 years. I wish them well but to say that it’s a coveted job I’m not sure I would necessarily agree with that.

As far as a coveted job, I don’t know that that’s accurate. I do think the Cowboys are obviously a high-profile team and whoever is the head coach of that team is certainly going to draw a lot of attention. But I think most football people that take over as a head coach want to do it on their terms, and that’s hard to do [in Dallas]. You take a Dan Campbell for instance. Is Dan Campbell Dan Campbell if he’s with the Dallas Cowboys?

It’s hard to imagine that he is. It’s hard to imagine that a lot of these coaches might be.”

Very interesting take. And we are confident there are fans that would agree with Aikman’s assessment and observations. However, teams being competitive is good for football. So we hope to see the Cowboys iron some issues out, make the tough changes and get back to living up to their old glory and standard.
