Trent Williams And San Francisco 49ers Finalizing New Deal

Last week the 49ers finally got a deal done with WR Brandon Aiyuk. But they didn’t stop there. Today Trent Williams and the San Francisco 49ers are finalizing a new deal. So the offensive lineman can end his hold out and rejoin his teammates. As Adam Schefter reported, Eleven-time Pro-Bowl OT Trent Williams and the 49ers are finalizing a reworked deal to get the left tackle back to the team. And to give him a chance to play Monday night’s opener vs. the New York Jets, per his agency @eliteloyaltysp

Jets pass-rusher Haason Reddick is now the only player still holding out and away from the team facility. NFL Insider Josina Anderson posted that per league source this morning on the #Jets and Haason Reddick situation: “Nothing has changed.” The Jets will play the 49ers on Sep. 9 so there are still a few days left to get a deal done.

As for Williams, more details regarding his contract were provided by Adam Schefter:

Compensation update: 49ers are guaranteeing the next two years on Trent Williams contract, equating to $48 million, including the additon of $7.6 million in salary this season, per @eliteloyaltysp. Williams has three years remaining on his contract. He will make $27.65 million in cash this season, the most of any offensive lineman.

Press conferences were held today with Aiyuk and Williams. Williams said in his presser that for a guy of his age and his stature security was important as far as a deal getting done. And also he mentioned that missing training camp wasn’t a big deal. He couldn’t recall the last time that he participated in a full camp. So clearly he doesn’t feel his hold out will affect his performance this season.

From Williams’ viewpoint his hold out from training camp makes sense. During the offseason he was overtaken by tackles Tristan Wirfs (Tampa Bay), Penei Sewell (Detroit) and Christian Darrisaw (Minnesota) on the pay scale. Per USA Today, San Francisco suffered four of its five regular-season losses in 2023 when Williams was inactive (twice). Or wasn’t on the field for at least half the snaps.

Therefore Williams being there for the regular-season opener against the New York Jets on “Monday Night Football” matters. His presence could be the difference between winning or losing. It’s a good thing the deal was done with only six days left before the game.
