Toronto Blue Jays Sign RHP Dylan Cease to a Seven-Year $210 Million Contract
For Toronto, there’s a new pitcher in town. A guy who is coming to the party well-equipped with a slider and four seam fastball in his arsenal. This is a team that got a taste of going deep into the postseason while almost winning their third title; and they are on an all out mission to hoist a trophy. Therefore, to get even stronger, the Toronto Blue Jays sign RHP Dylan Cease to a seven-year $210 million contract.
Going into the offseason, Cease was deemed one of the top free agent pitchers. This being the case despite any inconsistencies on the mound, command concerns and a higher ERA than some teams would prefer. The thing is when Dylan is on, he can toss something absolutely filthy and that’s what teams considering him banked on. Organizations focused on the lights out version of Cease. The guy who has the capability to be in Cy Young talks and discussions.
Nevertheless, the Blue Jays organization believes in Cease’s abilities as well as talents and have brought him aboard in their quest for World Series glory. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported on the Toronto Blue Jays signing stating,
“Right-hander Dylan Cease and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a seven-year, $210 million contract, pending a physical, sources tell ESPN. The defending American League champions get one of the best arms on the free agent market.”
Dylan Cease has had five consecutive 200+ strikeout seasons. He finished 4th in NL Cy Young voting in 2024 (coming up short behind Paul Skenes and Shota Imanaga) after being the AL runner-up in 2022. In five years as a full-time starter from 2021 to 2025, Cease led the majors in strikeouts (1,106) but also in walks (361) and wild pitches (51).

Cease is departing from San Diego after being acquired by the brown and gold in a trade with the White Sox in March 2024. Dylan was tendered a $22.025 million qualifying offer by the Padres. However, he declined it by the Nov. 18 deadline.
Since he has now signed with a new team, San Diego will receive a compensatory draft pick after the fourth round. And the Blue Jays will now have another starter to help them aim for their goal; to get back to the big dance.
