Timberwolves Legend Kevin Garnett Rejoining Team In New Off-Court Role
The recognition has been a long time coming. Especially after the falling out between himself and former owner Glen Taylor, who apparently refused to have his jersey retired. But that now looks to be water under the bridge as a reunion is set to take place. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett is rejoining the team and the Lynx in a new off-court role. Garnett will have an all-encompassing role involving business, community efforts and content development, sources told ESPN. His long-awaited No. 21 Wolves jersey retirement will also happen in Minnesota.
New governors Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez put in a lot of effort to mend the rift with Garnett. Which allowed Timberwolves officials to work with Garnett’s business manager Rich Gray and attorney George Daniel. Together they finalized his return to the franchise this month. The franchise will retire his No. 21 over the next two seasons.
Garnett definitely had an impact on the game of basketball. He is known as one of the greatest power forwards the game has ever seen. He was taken by the Timberwolves in the 1995 NBA Draft with the fifth overall pick. And became the first NBA player drafted directly out of high school in 20 years. He became one of five players to have won both the NBA Most Valuable Player award and the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. Garnett also went on to become a 15-time NBA All-Star.
His time with the Timberwolves was well-spent as he is their all-time leader in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. He is the only NBA player to lead a franchise in those five categories. Garnett is also the only player in Timberwolves history to win an MVP (2003-04).

However, the good times came to an end in 2007. After 14 years in Minnesota he was traded to the Boston Celtics. Promptly upon arrival he led the Celtics to a championship alongside Paul Pierce and Ray Allen after winning Defensive Player of the Year. In 2013 he and longtime Celtic Paul Pierce were traded to the Brooklyn Nets. From there he was traded back to Minnesota in 2015.
Therefore he announced his retirement from professional basketball in September 2016. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020 and named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. Now he can return to Minnesota and finally get his jersey number retired.
We extend a big congratulations to Kevin Garnett and wish him lots of success in his new off-court role with the Timberwolves and Lynx!
