Tight Ends Had The Best Day Ever During Week 8

Well I hope you had a happy National Tight Ends Day yesterday. How was I not aware of this very important observance? At any rate tight ends of the NFL had the best day ever during Week 8. But since I was ignorant of this day you may be as well. So here’s a little background information for you. The origins of the day was outlined in a post on the San Francisco 49ers website which said in part:

In Week 2 of 2018 against the Detroit Lions, former 49ers tight end Garrett Celek caught an 11-yard touchdown from Jimmy Garoppolo, where the tight end dragged two defenders along with him for the score. The quarterback joined the offense on the sideline to congratulate his teammates on the touchdown. On that day, “National Tight Ends Day” was born. The designation was actually created by Garoppolo himself. Little did the quarterback realize, he created a phenomenon with his tight ends that would eventually spread across the National Football League.

The NFL caught wind of Kittle and Co.’s occasion and officially christened the fourth Sunday in the month of October, “National Tight Ends Day.” In its inaugural year, Kittle and tight ends across the league were celebrated in Week 8 of 2019.

No team is complete without a good tight end. They can be blockers or pass catchers and the really good tight ends excel at both. Some former tight ends that were highly regarded are Kellen Winslow, Antonio Gates, Greg Olsen, Rob Gronkowski, and Tony Gonzalez. But there are some pretty good tight ends currently playing such as George Kittle, Travis Kelce, Sam La Porta, Mike Gesicki, and Cole Kmet.

But I did say that tight ends had the best day ever yesterday and that is true. Dante Koplowitz-Fleming laid out the stats for us:

Final numbers from today (and all-time ranks by TEs in a single day): 177 receptions (most) 1,965 receiving yards (2nd-most) 16 receiving TD (tied for 8th-most)

George Kittle, one of the founders of the day, had a great day yesterday. He was a go-to weapon for Brock Purdy as he put up six receptions, 128 yards and one touchdown. Travis Kelce also had a nice day yesterday as he recorded his first, yes his first, touchdown reception of the season. Along with 10 receptions and 90 yards. The touchdown made him just the fifth tight end in NFL history to hit 75 receiving touchdowns. Breaking a tie with former tight end great Jason Witten.

Great work guys!
