Thoughts And Notes On NFL Week 6 Sunday Action
The Jaguars were back in their second home in London. Drake Maye made his first start for the New England Patriots. And A.J. Brown returned to the field for the Philadelphia Eagles. Baker Mayfield and Jordan Love both threw four touchdowns. Below are more thoughts and notes on NFL Week 6 Sunday action starting with this week’s international game.
Jaguars @ Bears – Usually the Jaguars play well in London but that wasn’t the case today. The Jaguars offense went stagnant after scoring a field goal on their opening drive. They couldn’t get much of a run game going and didn’t pass the ball very much. Bears’ Cole Kmet pulled double duty as tight end and emergency long snapper and did well at both. After QB Caleb Williams threw an early interception, he settled down and threw four touchdowns during the game leading the Bears to a 16-35 victory.
Commanders @ Ravens – Ravens fans were nervous when the offense got intercepted on their opening drive and the Commanders turned it into a field goal. But it turned into a highly contested battle with Zay Flowers and Derrick Henry putting the team on their backs. The Commanders pulled within one score but again Henry broke another big run of 27 yards. The Ravens got their fourth victory with a score of 23-30.
Cardinals @ Packers – Green Bay was in complete control of this game from start to finish. The Cardinals fought hard but things didn’t go well especially since they ended the game with double digit penalties. Their run game sputtered in the first half and they had a couple of fumbles in the second half. Jordan Love and Romeo Doubs had an amazing pass and catch for a 10-yard touchdown. It just wasn’t the Cardinal’s day and the Packers won the game 13-34.
Thoughts And Notes On NFL Week 6 Sunday Action
Texans @ Patriots – Drake Maye still had to play behind the same offensive line as Jacoby Brissett which was unfortunate. However, he did throw a nice 40-yard touchdown bomb to end the first half. And the Patriots defense did hold the Texans’ offense somewhat in check in the first half. But then Maye was strip-sacked which led to a Texans’ touchdown. And the Patriots’ defense fell off letting the Texans run away with the game. Maye threw three TD’s but lost 41-21.
Buccaneers @ Saints – Another rookie QB Spencer Rattler started for the Saints in place of Derek Carr. Besides that there were six turnovers, almost 20 penalties, a punt return for a touchdown and wild momentum swings. The Buccaneers pass rush overwhelmed the Saint’s offense. As mentioned QB Baker Mayfield threw four touchdowns and three interceptions contributing to the momentum swings. In the end the Buccaneers poured on 27 points winning the game 51-27.
Browns @ Eagles – The first quarter was nothing but punts. However, A.J. Brown was back for the Eagles and he and Jalen Hurts hooked up for a 22-yard touchdown. Cleveland had a great play when a 57-yard field goal attempt was blocked and the Browns recovered it. It was turned into a 50-yard touchdown by Rodney McLeod Jr. Crowd noise accounted for two false starts on the Browns causing them to settle for a field goal. The Eagles held on for the 16-20 win.
Other Early Game Day Sunday Action
Colts @ Titans – Joe Flacco started at QB while Anthony Richardson was relegated to QB3. The Colts struck first with an opening 70-yard drive for a touchdown. But an interception by Amani Hooker led to a Titans’ touchdown. But the Titans committed 11 penalties for 113 yards, including several big penalties at critical times. And once again let another win slip away leaving them with a record of 1-4 after their bye week. After the Colts’ offense took the lead their defense provided one last stop and the Colts got the 20-17 win.
Chargers @ Broncos – The Chargers managed the Broncos defense and pass rush by getting the ball quickly out of QB Herbert’s hands. And they effectively ran the ball. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh had to temporarily leave the game due to an arrhythmia issue and was escorted to the locker room. He later returned to the sideline. The Chargers’ defense intercepted Broncos QB Bo Nix which led to a field goal. Denver finally got on the board in the fourth quarter as the Broncos put together a 95-yard touchdown drive. But they couldn’t mount an effective comeback and lost to the Chargers 23-16.
Steelers @ Raiders – The Steelers got on the scoreboard first with a field goal and the Raiders answered with a touchdown. Najee Harris rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Chris Boswell kicked four field goals. Even QB Justin Fields got in on the act rushing for two touchdowns himself. The Raiders defense had no answer for the Steelers running game. Which allowed them to break a two game losing streak as they handed a 32-13 loss to the Raiders.
Late Game Sunday Afternoon Notes
Falcons @ Carolina – Andy Dalton and the Panthers were trading blows with the Falcons. But the wheels came off in the fourth quarter when the Falcons forced two interceptions. The Panthers’ defense is dealing with multiple injuries and are having trouble stopping offenses. That was evidenced by the Falcons gaining 423 yards on the day, with 198 of them coming on the ground. Ultimately the Panthers couldn’t overcome the interceptions and lost 38-20 to the Falcons.
Lions @ Cowboys – David Montgomery immediately started earning his new contract money. He ran in a touchdown on the opening drive of the Lions knocking Cowboys out of his way. Later in the first half he scored another touchdown. Sadly in the third quarter Lions defense end Aidan Hutchinson suffered a gruesome leg injury and was carted off the field. Dallas continued shooting themselves in the foot with turnovers. The Lions just pounded the Cowboys mercilessly winning the game 47-9.
Teams on a bye this week: Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings.
