The No. 1 NFC Playoff Seed Was On The Line Sunday Night
It was an NFC North clash with an important distinction on the line. The loser of the game would be the No. 5 seed without a bye week. So with the No. 1 NFC playoff seed on the line Sunday night a huge battle was expected. Both the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions came out playing hard with such a great prize up for grabs. The defenses were playing lights out to begin the game and forced both offenses to punt on their opening drives.
But the Lions put together an 11 play, 88 yard drive on their second possession. Jahmyr Gibbs couldn’t get much going in the run game. But on 1st & 10 at MIN 25 he was the one who ran in the 25-yard touchdown allowing the Lions to score first. Minnesota went a quick three and out which included a 17-yard sack of Sam Darnold. However, the Vikings defense returned the favor making the Lions go three and out. They put a crushing hit on Gibbs causing an 8-yard loss and sacked Goff for 11 yards. The Vikings started from the 50-yard line on their next possession. They couldn’t find the end zone on 3rd & Goal and went for the 4th down. Darnold couldn’t connect with Justin Jefferson and turned the ball over on downs.
Detroit was backed up to the end zone when Goff just escaped a safety. The officials ruled he was throwing the ball in the vicinity of a receiver. At any rate, a few plays later his pass was tipped and then intercepted by Ivan Pace. Minnesota was on the Lions 6 yard line and Darnold overthrew Jefferson a couple of times so they settled for a 25-yard field goal. Detroit started at their 40-yard line and ended up kicking a 48 yard field goal. The halftime score was 6-10, Lions.

Minnesota got the ball first in the third quarter. They got down to the DET 2 and failed to convert the fourth down. In the first half they were 0 – 3 in the red zone and continued the trend in the second half. Darnold had been off on a lot of his throws. And it was all downhill after that. Detroit’s defense used man coverage to contain the Vikings’ receivers. And they got plenty of pressure on Darnold all game long. Jahmyr Gibbs scored four touchdowns on 28 touches with 178 yards. Also welcome back Alex Anzalone!
Detroit overwhelmed Minnesota and claimed the No. 1 playoff spot in the NFC. Now they’ll have a week to rest. The Vikings will head to Los Angeles to face the Rams. They’ll play on Monday, January 13th at 8:00PM EST.
