It is considered one of the toughest divisions in the MLB. It contains powerful teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres. And you can’t count out the Arizona Diamondbacks either. However, thanks to the Rafael Devers trade the NL West competition has heated up even more. It’s no secret that Devers is one of the best hitters in the league right now which is why the Giants wasted no time in trading for him.
The signing helps to narrow the gap between the Giants’ long-time rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Acquiring a significant hitter like Devers will only intensify the rivalry between the two teams. It was thought that the Dodgers had been a potential suitor for Devers, but they missed out. Now they will have to regularly face him over the next eight years. On the bright side, at least they didn’t have to take on his hefty contract. And they may make a counter move by acquiring another pitcher to help even the playing field.
As for the Padres, manager Mike Schildt made it clear that their focus will remain internal.
“Our focus is going to be internal,” Shildt said. “We’re going to be aware of what’s taking place in the division. But all that we control is what the Padres do. You look up and you see the addition of Devers to a division rival … they’re investing in the now and in the future.”
That has been his stance since he joined the Padres last season. Despite other division teams, especially the Dodgers, continually making blockbuster additions. However, with A.J. Preller as the general manager, you never know what moves he might make to improve the team.

Many of the Padres players know Devers well having played with him over various seasons. One player who heard about the Devers trade was former Red Sox Xander Bogaerts. He immediately texted his former teammate for confirmation who quickly responded back that it was true. That led to Bogaerts commenting:
“It made them a lot better,” Bogaerts said of the Giants. “We aren’t going to deny it. He’s a big time player, and the guy’s a great kid, man. Some people might think differently because some people might not really know him on a personal level.”
Third baseman Manny Machado concurred adding:
“Good competition, man,” Machado said. “It’s going to be until the end. That’s what we play for. It’s definitely going to be fun. This division just got better. It was good already — great already.”
Now that Devers is a part of the National League West things should get even more interesting in the division. It’s gonna be a race to the finish!
