Teoscar Hernandez Wins 2024 MLB Home Run Derby; First Dodger Ever!
There’s a new derby champion and he is also making franchise history! Teoscar Hernandez wins the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby and he is the first Dodger ever to do it. Getting it done against steep competition like: Pete Alonso, Bobby Witt Jr.; Gunnar Henderson, Adolis Garcia; Jose Ramirez, Marcell Ozuna and Alec Bohm.
Magic Johnson was among the first to congratulate Teoscar on his batting feat. Johnson states,
“Dodger Nation, let’s all congratulate Teoscar Hernandez for winning the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby! He’s the first Dodger ever to do so!”
It could seem a bit unbelievable that this is the first time someone from the Dodger franchise has won this event. Especially, since the ball club has become known for being a lineup that can definitely blast a ball out of the park. And hit bombs, is exactly what Hernandez did.
To get the big “W” Teoscar really got his swing going. Becoming the first Dodger to reach the Home Run Derby final since Joc Pederson in 2015. Knocking 47 home runs in total, into a crowd of screaming fans. 19 in round one, 14 in round two and 14 in the finals.
Participating in the derby was a lifelong goal for Teoscar. And he was happy to go for it even if people felt he could never win. After becoming the new home run king, Hernandez states,
People maybe underestimate [me]. You can see it at the end when [Bobby Witt Jr.] was hitting all those homers,” Hernández said after the competition. “Everybody was [rooting] for him. But I’m here, [and I’m] as talented as all those guys over there.”
Yes, the talent is clearly apparent. And Teoscar did have support in the house. Like his family, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (last year’s champ); and his teammates Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani. Plus, Juan Soto also came over to cheer him on.
Speaking of Juan. In addition to making Dodgers history, Hernández became the seventh Dominican-born player to win the Derby, and the second in three years, joining Juan Soto (2022).

Could we possibly see a Dodger repeat next year? Well, there is a good chance. There’s another guy in blue who is eyeing the derby.
Many fans had wanted to see Shohei Ohtani blasts some balls over the fence in competition. However, with him coming off a surgery it just wasn’t possible. But, Ohtani isn’t ruling out next year’s home run derby which will take place down in Atlanta, Georgia.
So far Ohtani has been quite a home run manufacturer this year. With 29 homers and a whole half season left to play. Right up there with other HR elites like Baltimore Orioles Gunnar Henderson (28) and the New York Yankees Aaron Judge (34). So then, if Ohtani does decide to compete in the ATL he will definitely be some tough competition.
