Tennessee Titans Have Fired Their Head Coach Brian Callahan
We’re just about to wrap up Week 6 of the NFL season with another doubleheader on Monday Night Football and already we have a head coach casualty. Although given their record it isn’t really much of a surprise. Today the Tennessee Titans announced that they have fired their head coach, Brian Callahan. Just six weeks into the season and the team record is currently 1-5, last season they went 3-14. That kind of win-loss record spells doom for any head coach. Especially when they have the No. 1 pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, Cam Ward, as their starting quarterback.
Therefore the team put out a statement regarding the decision to part ways with Callahan. Titans President of Football Operations Chad Brinker said:
“After extended conversations with our owner and general manager, we met with Brian Callahan this morning to tell him we are making a change at head coach. These decisions are never easy, and they become more difficult when they involve people of great character. We are grateful for Brian’s investment in the Titans and Tennessee community during his tenure as head coach. We thank him and his family for being exemplary ambassadors of the Tennessee Titans.
While we are committed to a patient and strategic plan to build a sustainable, winning football program, we have not demonstrated sufficient growth. Our players, fans, and community deserve a football team that achieves a standard we are not currently meeting, and we are committed to making the hard decisions necessary to reach and maintain that standard.”
Despite wanting to achieve a higher standard, a coaching change can be traumatic for a rookie quarterback like Cam Ward. But it’s not a rare occurrence as pointed out by Adam Schefter:
The last four QBs taken No. 1 overall have seen their head coach fired during their rookie campaign:
2021 — Trevor Lawrence (Urban Meyer)
2023 — Bryce Young (Frank Reich)
2024 — Caleb Williams (Matt Eberflus)
2025 — Cam Ward (Brian Callahan)

Likely, then the Titans will look for a head coach who knows how to develop a young quarterback. Particularly since Ward himself has not been happy with the team’s performance. After the 26-0 loss to the AFC South division rival Houston Texans, Ward made a brutally honest statement. After the game he said, “If we keeping it a buck right now, we’re a**.” The Titans have fired their head coach and general manager over the last couple of years, so this latest upheaval is nothing new.
Interestingly, The Titans hired Callahan in 2023 after controlling owner Amy Adams-Strunk fired former coach Mike Vrabel, who led the team to two AFC South division titles. Now this Sunday, Vrabel will return to Nissan Stadium as head coach of the New England Patriots to take on the Titans. However, Vrabel is downplaying the return and is focused on trying to get another win. At this point, the Titans have not yet named an interim head coach. But whomever they choose will have a lot of work to do.
