Teddy Bridgewater Unretired And Signed With The Detroit Lions
He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with the final first round pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. During his ten-year NFL career he also spent time with the Saints, Panthers, Broncos and Dolphins. On August 10, 2023, Bridgewater signed with the Lions, a move which reunited him with Dan Campbell, the assistant head coach during his time with the Saints. On December 16, 2023, Bridgewater announced his plans to retire from the NFL following the conclusion of the season. Now Teddy Bridgewater has unretired and signed with the Detroit Lions again.
After his 2023 retirement, Bridgewater became the head coach of Miami Northwestern, his former high school. He lead the school to a Class 3A Florida High School Athletic Association state championship earlier this month in his first season on the job. But now that the school’s season had been wrapped up the plan was to return to the NFL:
“That’s the plan,” Bridgewater said on Tuesday’s edition of The Insiders. “My team knows that’s the plan. We wanted to win a state championship and then coach goes back to the league, see what happens, and then come back February in the offseason, continue coaching high school football. We’ll see how it plays out.”
Bridgewater, 32, knows the offense and is a good fit in Detroit. Lions head coach Dan Campbell added his thoughts on the matter:
“I’ve been in contact with Teddy for a while. It was something that was always potentially a possibility,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Thursday. “We all know what Teddy’s been doing down there and giving back to his community. They won a championship down there, so his debut at coaching worked out pretty dang good.”

Campbell went on to say:
“But to be able to get somebody back here that’s got experience — he’s staying in shape, he’s been throwing, just get him worked back in here a little bit — it just brings a level of professionalism, veteran presence, somebody that’s great for our team, great for the position.”
However, Campbell did point out that bringing on Bridgewater was not an indictment on second-year backup Hendon Hooker. “It doesn’t mean we’re disappointed in Hooker,” he said. “He’s improved. He really has,” Campbell said of Hooker. “We feel like every week he’s gotten a little bit better, and this does not mean that Hooker is out. That’s not what this means. If it comes to that, Hooker’s gonna play for us. But Teddy probably will, too.”
And it can’t hurt having an experienced veteran like Bridgewater in case anything happened to Jared Goff. Welcome back Teddy!
