Team USA Wins Gold in Mixed Team Aerials Breaking Winter Games 10 Gold Medal Record

The United States had been slowly, but surely inching towards ten gold medals and on Friday, February 20 it finally happened. Furthermore, garnering ten was historic in itself. Winning ten tied Team USA’s most gold medals tally in a single Winter Games. However, just hours later then another major accomplishment occurred… a new golden best and standard. While most Americans slept, Team USA wins gold in mixed team aerials breaking the Winter Games 10 gold medal record!

The USA were viewed as favorites when it came to the freestyle skiing mixed team aerials event. They had previously won the gold in this sport and were attempting to once more put themselves on top. And that’s exactly what they did. Beating out Switzerland and China, two men and one woman put down jaw-dropping; gravity-defying performances.

Four years after topping the podium in the inaugural competition in Beijing, Connor Curran, Chris Lillis & Kaila Kuhn combine to take Gold in mixed team aerials. This marks a first medal for Kaila Kuhn and Connor Curran, and a second Gold for Christopher Lillis. That’s back to back Olympic gold medals for the stars & stripes in this event. Additionally, that’s now 11 gold medals for Team USA in Milano-Cortina. The most in any Winter Olympics ever.

To put this achievement into perspective, the last time Team USA even came close was over two decades ago. 24 years ago during the 2002 Salt Lake Games. That Winter Olympics the United States went home with 10 gold medals.

Furthermore, there is more Team USA Olympic history to briefly consider. The United States is real close to doing something that hasn’t been seen in over 70 years. And you may have noticed if you have been watching the overall medal count.

However, if you haven’t, allow us to fill you in on the present medal situation. The United States is currently solo 2nd place in golds and total medals (30). Norway is ahead of us with 17 gold medals (37 total medals); and the home country (Italy) is behind us with nine golds (27 total medals). The last time Team USA finished solo 2nd in both standings (golds/total) was at the 1952 Oslo Games. U.S. was tied second in golds, 2nd in total in 2006. Let’s see if we can hold on!
