Team USA Men’s Hockey Wins Gold Against Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics!
46 YEARS. The United States have had to wait over four and a half decades for this long-awaited sports moment. But the golden hiatus has finally concluded. There was no miracle needed, Team USA men’s hockey wins gold against Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics!
Over 40 years ago, on this very day…February 22, 1980 in Lake Placid… the United States pulled off the miracle on ice against the Soviet Union winning 4-3. Since then, Team USA men’s hockey hit a gold medal drought. They had never won Olympic gold in this event again since the start of the Decade of Excess. In the modern era of Olympic athletics, the American men had only won gold twice. In 1960 (Lake Tahoe) and in 1980 (Lake Placid).
However, Team USA has come close to being golden. There were opportunities. From 1920 to 1952 the United States won four silver and one bronze medal. In later years, the U.S. won four more silver medals:
- 2010 Vancouver
- 2002 Salt Lake City
- 1972 Sapporo
- 1956 Cortina
But once again February 22nd would become a day to remember. The day when Team USA would bite into a gold medal for hockey after long last. And avenge their Four Nations loss to Canada. How did they get this feat done?
Team USA Men’s Hockey Wins Gold Against Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics!
Just minutes into the game Team USA drew first blood. Matt Boldy was on a mission and it was accomplished. Through two defenders, Boldy popped the puck up in the air then backhanded it into the goal for the score. The United States remained in full control all the rest of the first period.
In the second, Canada kept HAMMERING and attacking near the goal line; bullying behind the net but the USA played excellent defense and with numerous saves by Connor Hellebuyck. Canada could not seem to score. However, Canada caught a break as two players were penalized making it a five on three situation. The three remaining Team USA players took stances near the net in a diamond-like formation that helped hold off Canada.
No Canadian score occurred. The USA was absolutely fantastic! They kept clearing the puck from the area, preventing Team Canada from having much opportunity. Hellebuyck had 17 saves by midway through the second period (he’d end with 41). Connor looked like he could have been a character from the Matrix. He moved with such smooth fluidity, stopping and preventing shots that looked like they should’ve scored.
Nonetheless, Canada remained relentless. You could feel Canada picking up steam and finally the dam breaks. With 1:44 left in the second period they score. Game is now tied up 1-1. The game would remain tied even as the time in regulation ran out.
Therefore, overtime baby! And Team USA met the moment. Jack Hughes scored the thrilling overtime game-winning “golden goal” for Team USA, defeating Canada 2-1 to secure the men’s ice hockey gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Team USA left it all on the ice to get their historic victory. Including Jack Hughes teeth. The New Jersey Devils center scored the historic winner despite losing teeth to a high stick earlier in the game. These Americans are tough. Congratulations to Team USA, who are coming home with a record 12 golds, 12 silvers and 9 bronze medals. For a total of 33 medals. Great job everyone!
