Taylor Fritz And Coco Gauff Brought Home Second United Cup
It’s only in it’s third year of competition and already the United States is dominating the tournament. Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff have brought home the second United Cup in tennis. What is the United Cup you ask? It’s an international hard court tennis competition featuring mixed-gender teams from 18 countries. The first event was held in December 2022 into January 2023. The event is played across multiple Australian cities over 11 days in the leadup to the Australian Open.
On August 7, 2022 the tournament was announced as a replacement for the ATP Cup. That was a men’s team tournament that had been established in 2020 by the ATP and Tennis Australia. However, that tournament had been hampered by low attendance and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This new United Cup tournament more closely resembles the Hopman Cup tournament formerly played in Perth from 1989 to 2019. It was also a mixed-genders team competition.
In the 2025 United Cup, both Fritz and Gauff produced strong singles victories to lead the United States to its second United Cup in three years. Handing Poland its second consecutive runner-up finish in the process. Gauff won an engrossing 6-4, 6-4 opening singles against Iga Swiatek. Followed by Fritz delivering the encore with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4) win over Hubert Hurkacz. Their serve-dominated match featured 30 aces and just three break points, according to Infosys ATP Stats. Gauff said, “It’s great to win a team event, the only team event I’ve ever won, so I’m super excited.”

Fritz was equally excited by the team win. “It’s amazing. It’s almost more fun to win the team events because you have people to celebrate with afterwards,” Fritz said. “Coco made it easy for me as the MVP on the team; it definitely helped my job a lot and its great to get it a second time.”
Gauff had a banner season in 2024 culminating with winning the WTA Finals Riyadh (where she also defeated Swiatek). And Fritz finishing runner-up at the Nitto ATP Finals. Now they have taken their winning ways into 2025 with the United Cup victory. Gauff, who did not drop a set in five singles matches, begins the year at No. 3 in the PIF WTA Rankings. Fritz, at a career-best No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings, dropped his opening match to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Perth but then won four straight.
