Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady Revealed He Cloned His Late Dog Lua

They say that dogs are man’s best friends. And for Tom Brady losing his beloved pet was almost too much to bear. Therefore, he decided to take action. On Tuesday, the former seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady revealed that he cloned his late dog named Lua.

Cloning has been around for decades. For over a century, if you will, beginning in the late 1880s. However, modern science pins a date in the 1950’s when British biologist John Gurdon was the first to successfully clone an animal using somatic cell nuclear transfer. Throughout the years researchers have worked with frogs, sea urchins and sheep to progress and develop various methods.

Furthermore, many might also remember the “breakthrough” in the 1990s. Scientists at the Roslin Institute “birthed” Dolly the sheep; the first mammal cloned from an adult cell, born in Scotland in July 1996, and announced to the public in February 1997. Dolly at the time sparked much debate whether cloning should be considered ethical. Or if one day such technology or practices would be utilized on humans.

Nevertheless, now almost 30 years later and all this science is being put to a new use. Tom Brady revealed that his current dog Junie is a clone of his late dog Lua, who died in December 2023. The dogs were cloned by Colossal Biosciences, a biotech company that Brady is an investor in, using blood collected prior to Lua’s death.

Brady spoke about cloning his deceased dog stating,

“My animals, they mean the world to me. … I worked with Colossal and leveraged their non-invasive cloning technology through a simple blood draw of our family’s elderly dog before she passed.”

Bailey Richards of People magazine reminded the masses that Brady is not the only celebrity to have his dog cloned. Richard confirms that Brady’s announcement regarding his dog cloning coincides with Colossal Biosciences’ announcement that it is acquiring Viagen Pets and Equine, which cloned Barbra Streisand and Paris Hilton’s dogs.

Richards also mentions, “Viagen has ‘exclusive licensing and access to the breakthrough technologies’ that were developed by the Roslin Institute of Edinburgh, which is widely known for cloning Dolly the Sheep in the late ‘90s.” Interesting. Well, Brady has certainly kept busy since retiring, getting into NFL/WNBA ownership and now the sciences. But will he stay with the latter? Or will public opinion change his mind?
