Steph Curry Hamstring Injury—Grade 1 Strain, to Be Reevaluated in One Week
For hours after game one, GSW fans held their collective breaths. Which grade would their star player’s injury be? On Wednesday, they got the best possible Steph Curry hamstring injury update news. Grade 1. But what does that mean?
Dr. Nirav Pandya who specializes in Orthopedic medicine as well as surgeries; and has been featured on NBC Sports explains,
“A grade 1 strain is a microscopic tear of the muscle. Microscopic tearing which is much better than the more significant tearing that occurs with a grade 2 or 3. The timeline for return varies based on the following factors (this overall is good news):
1. The location of the tear within the muscle (higher up is worse than lower down).
2. The number of hamstring muscles involved.
3. The cross sectional area of muscle involved.
4. The degree of inflammation / fluid. 5. How the athlete feels in terms of mobility, strength, and pain / swelling. These injuries have a high rate of recurrence and can set you up for injuries to other areas so a cautious approach is key.”
Steph Curry left early in the second quarter of game one against the Minnesota Timberwolves; after being seen grabbing the back of his leg several times. Curry had put up 13 points when a bit more of limp appeared in his steps. He seemed to carry on for moment, before he finally motioned to be replaced and ultimately headed to the locker room. He would not return to the game; but the Warriors would prevail in his absence. Winning 99-88.

Golden State’s PR Communication’s page also released a statement on Steph Curry’s injury. Giving a hint to a possible timeline before his return to action. They mentioned,
“Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, who exited last night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves with 8:19 remaining in the second quarter with a strained left hamstring, underwent an MRI this morning. The MRI confirmed the injury as a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Curry will be re-evaluated in one (1) week.”
One week takes us to Game 5. If the Warriors can even get one more win in the next three games. If Curry is cleared for Game 5, he could come into a 2-2 situation. Then, be off again till Sunday. Not bad.
But it will depend on his health and state. As Shams Charania reports, “The Warriors expect Stephen Curry to miss at least one week with the Grade 1 left hamstring strain, sources tell ESPN. An exact return will be based on how their All-NBA guard responds to rehab with his first muscle strain.”
