Stefon Diggs Suffered Season-Ending Knee Injury
It was the worst news possible for the Houston Texans to receive. They were already missing Nico Collins due to a hamstring injury. It’s now confirmed that Stefon Diggs suffered a season-ending knee injury. The non-contact injury resulted in a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). That leaves Tank Dell as the lone starting receiver. This was Digg’s first season with the Texans after being traded from the Buffalo Bills. And as in the past he was very productive on the field. As long-time Houston journalist John McClain noted:
“Diggs was on a pace for 100 catches, 1,054 yards and eight touchdowns receiving and rushing. It would have been his fifth consecutive 100-catch season and his seventh 1,000-yard season if he’d been able to reach those milestones.”
And by all accounts Diggs was very happy being with the Texans. He even restructured his contract which may now be a liability for him. Reporter Michael Shapiro explains:
“The Texans voided the final three-years on Diggs’ contract after 2024, then added a portion of 2025 salary into 2024. Diggs’ calculus for the move? He received an additional $3.5 million in guaranteed money in 2024, and he can now hit the free-agent market this summer seeking a lucrative new deal. He’ll still sign a multi-million deal either with Houston or another franchise in the offseason. But I suspect his contract (plus his $22.5 million 2024 salary) will fall well short of the salary owed through 2027 before the preseason contract alteration.”
The business of sport is a brutal one as things can change quickly. So now the Texans have to move on and adjust quickly as they will be facing the Jets tomorrow on Thursday Night Football.

However, this is an opportunity for other players to step up and prove that they can contribute. Xavier Hutchinson, John Metchie III and veteran Robert Woods are waiting in the wings. Head coach DeMeco Ryans said,
“One thing that sticks out, Hutch, Metch, all those guys just from our last game just showing guys winning their one-on-one opportunities,” Ryans said of Sunday’s win over Indianapolis. “Hutch going to the ground there making a tough catch. Metchie finding a way to win in an off-schedule moment there in the game and come up with a big catch. That’s all we ask is win your one-on-one and make the plays that you are supposed to make. If guys do that collectively as a team, we will be just fine.”
Having Diggs out for the season is a blow to the Texans. It’s situations like this that reveal the true mettle of a team.
