Stefon Diggs Rejoining The AFC East With New England Patriots

Last year he was traded from the Buffalo Bills to the Houston Texans. There was tension surrounding the amount of his playing time dropping. But his going to Houston provided even more firepower to quarterback C.J. Stroud who already had Nico Collins and Tank Dell. However, his season ended in Week 8 when he suffered an ACL tear. The Texans had wiped out the final three years on his Bills contract, giving him the ability to become a free agent after the 2024 season. So now Stefon Diggs is rejoining the AFC East with the New England Patriots.

The Patriots had plenty of salary cap to play with and have been busy spending it. So far they have acquired a lot of guys on defense such as Milton Williams, Harold Landry and Robert Spillane. Fewer acquisitions had been made on the offensive side of the ball so this is a big signing for the Patriots. Diggs is 31 and will be heading into his eleventh season in the NFL. Nevertheless he was putting up big numbers in Houston prior to being sidelined by the injury.

Regardless the Patriots felt that he was worthy of being added to their roster. In fact, Adam Schefter provided the details of the contract Diggs agreed to:

“ESPN Sources: Free-agent WR Stefon Diggs reached agreement on a three-year, $69 million deal including $26 million guaranteed with the New England Patriots.”

That’s a very good deal for Diggs financially speaking. And of course the Patriots could use an experienced veteran to help mentor their receiver corps. And also he can be a boon to quarterback Drake Maye who performed well last season despite the team’s losing record. However, some expressed concern that Diggs can be a diva and not good for the culture. But, Texans beat writer Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston had a different take.

“He fit in well, he was popular in the locker room. He was well-liked by the coaching staff,” Wilson said in a recent YouTube video. “A lot of people said, ‘Well, he’s a diva’ and all that sort of stuff — it’s not really the way he was perceived in the locker room. He was perceived as a fun-loving personality and someone that definitely is an individual, but what he does helps the collective.”

Diggs was a three-time captain with the Bills. He is one of four players in NFL history to record four consecutive seasons with 100-plus receptions. And he is one of two receivers to be selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the past four seasons, the other is Tyreek Hill. So perhaps Diggs will fit in seamlessly with the Patriots helping them to improve on last year’s performance.
