Steelers Russell Wilson Will Not Play Against Falcons Due to Calf Injury

During the offseason Pittsburgh made some decisions in order to enhance their offense. One big move being with the quarterback position. The franchise went and grabbed up Russell Wilson from the Denver Broncos. However, unfortunately the QB sustained a leg injury right before the season was to commence; making his season opener start questionable. Well, on Sunday a final decision was made, the Steelers Russell Wilson will not play against the Atlanta Falcons due to his calf injury.

This is certainly not how the Steelers wanted to begin the new year. However, this is really the best path to take. Russell staying healthy overall throughout the season is really the key.

Therefore, if sitting him out a week can get him back on track. Then, that is the way to handle this situation. ESPN’s Adam Schefter had confirmed the cautious approach that the Pittsburgh franchise has decided to pursue. Adam had reported,

“Steelers QB Russell Wilson, listed as questionable for Sunday due to a calf injury, has told the team that he can play vs. the Falcons, but the team doctors are being more cautious, per sources. The team plans to make a final decision about his status Sunday. If Wilson can’t start, Justin Fields will.”

Although, Russell Wilson wanted and thought he could be ready to start on Sunday. The Steelers aren’t the kind of team to play with injuries. Especially ones that deal with the calf. As NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport mentioned just hours ago,

“The Steelers are expected to examine QB Russell Wilson this morning to check out his calf, but as it stands now, it’s more likely Justin Fields starts vs the Falcons than Wilson, per me and Mike Garafolo. The team is cautious with calf injuries. Wilson is questionable.”

Well, there is no more questions. Obviously, team doctors did not particularly like what they saw after their morning examination of Wilson. And they alerted the team of their findings. Due their latest assessment, the Steelers have pulled Russell from the Atlanta Falcons matchup. Schefter confirms, “Russell Wilson officially is inactive today; Justin Fields starts vs. the Falcons.” Hopefully, Wilson’s calf will heal fast, but still in the meantime it will be intriguing to see how Justin Fields performs today against the Falcons. More on the game later.
