Steelers Owner Art Rooney II Believes Aaron Rodgers Will Provide Decision to Play by NFL Draft
To sign or not re-sign, that is now the question. Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still taking his time to mull over whether or not he will return to Pittsburgh for another season. However, the Steelers organization feels the 42-year-old is close to finally providing them with a definitive answer. In fact, Steelers owner Art Rooney II believes Aaron Rodgers will provide his decision to play by the NFL Draft.
Rodgers giving the Steelers a heads up by or preferably before the draft will be extremely helpful. It will allow the franchise to make various roster adjustments and choices in order to field a competitive team for the upcoming season; while also setting the groundwork for the future.
Nonetheless, the 2026 NFL Draft is quickly approaching and is now barely 22 days away. The 91st edition of the NFL Draft will be hosted in Pittsburgh for the first time since 1948. A total of 257 picks will be spread over seven rounds and three days from April 23-25 at Point State Park and Acrisure Stadium. The time between first-round selections has been shortened from 10 minutes to eight minutes. It’s the first timing adjustment since 2008, when the allotment dropped from 15 minutes to 10 minutes. The timing for Rounds 2-7 remains unchanged from last year.
So then, with the draft just three weeks away, Aaron Rodgers is “on the clock” with the Steelers. But Pittsburgh is sounding pretty hopeful when it comes Aaron’s return. Art Rooney II said Tuesday at the NFL annual meetings in Phoenix that he believes Rodgers is close to a decision on whether to re-sign with the Steelers, retire or go elsewhere. Art mentioned,
“When I talked to him and [general manager] Omar [Khan] talked to him, he told us he wasn’t going to take as long this year as he did last year [to make a decision].
I have not talked to him [since],” Rooney told a group of reporters. “Coach (Mike McCarthy) has been in contact with him pretty regularly, and I think a decision is probably coming soon.
I would say by the draft, I expect an answer, yeah.”
Rodgers, 42, joined the Steelers a year ago after 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and two with the New York Jets. He helped Pittsburgh go 10-7 and win the AFC North. Rodgers is a four-time MVP and 10-time Pro Bowler; and completed 65.7% of his passes for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Steelers last year.

Nevertheless, despite Pittsburgh’s owner talking a deadline for Rodgers. The Steelers coach Mike McCarthy is singing a different tune. McCarthy has spoken to Rodgers throughout the offseason and while he didn’t set a timeline for Aaron to make a decision, he did say the quarterback is in a ‘positive space.’
McCarthy added, “We’re preparing for our players to come in next week, and we want to give them the information of how we’re going to operate. I’m focusing on getting the whole team together.”
