Steelers Outplayed The Giants On Monday Night Football

Despite offensive struggles earlier in the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers built upon their offensive success last week. Against the Jets last week they put up 37 points, the highest amount of points for the season. And tonight they did well again as the Pittsburgh Steelers outplayed the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. In the first half the teams looked evenly matched. The Giants were able to move the ball on the Steelers and vice-versa. Although early on the Giants couldn’t contain Najee Harris as he broke tackles and picked up first downs. On the other hand, the Steelers were giving up big chunk passing plays.

But one glaring issue was that neither team could get a touchdown and kept having to settle for field goals. However, penalties played a role in both teams missing out on possible touchdowns. For instance, the Steelers had a touchdown negated due to a face mask penalty. And the Giants had a touchdown nullified by an illegal shift penalty. In both instances the teams had to settle for field goals.

Russell Wilson was great outside the pocket and throwing the ball on the run. And he threw some dimes tonight to George Pickens. One in particular caused a bit of an uproar. It was a short 9-yard pass to Pickens. He made an acrobatic catch in the end zone and it was ruled a touchdown.

However, the Replay Official reviewed the pass completion ruling, and the play was reversed. Although Pickens’ right foot touched the ground twice, his left foot did not make contact. People felt that he got two feet down even if it was the same foot twice. But according to NFL rules the player must ensure that they are inbounds with at least both feet or another body part down. So the second half ended with a score of 9-9.

In the third quarter Calvin Austin III returned a punt for a 73-yard touchdown. Some felt the Steelers should have been called for roughing the kicker but the officials didn’t think so and the touchdown stood. The Steelers scored another touchdown in the fourth and the Giants responded with one of their own. Wilson had the ball punched out and the Giants recovered. But then Jones also had a fumble which the Steelers recovered. The Giants had one more chance to try to tie the game. They were moving the ball efficiently until Jones was intercepted by Beanie Bishop at the Steelers 29-yard line. It was game over and the Steelers got the 18-26 win.
