Steelers Mike Tomlin Says Aaron Rodgers Has Fracture in Wrist That Will Not Require Surgery

There has been a wait for news regarding Pittsburgh’s veteran quarterback. But now there is finally an update. The Steelers HC Mike Tomlin told reporters that Aaron Rodgers has a fracture in his wrist that will not require surgery. His status for Sunday’s game against Chicago is uncertain.

Aaron Rodgers injured his left wrist in a Week 11 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. During a second-and-goal play he was hit by defenders after throwing a pass. He landed awkwardly on his hand and wrist and could be seen grimacing in pain as well as grabbing the area after the play.

On Tuesday the Pittsburgh organization finally had available intel on Rodgers’ situation. NFL insider Tom Pelissero reports,

“Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers underwent further tests Monday that confirmed he won’t need surgery on his fractured left wrist, sources tell me and Ian Rapoport.

Rodgers is pushing to play Sunday at Chicago. But doctors must clear him and his status moving forward is TBD.

Mike Tomlin confirms Aaron Rodgers won’t need wrist surgery, but won’t know until later in the week if Rodgers can play. ‘Really it’s just about bracing it and securing it for his comfort and safety, and then it’s about how functional he is.’ Friday will be a big day.”

Head Coach Mike Tomlin also gave a brief statement to the press in regards to Rodgers’ injury. He discussed the organization’s plans to move forward with this setback at the quarterback position. And he talks Aaron’s disposition about wanting to play as soon as possible. Tomlin mentions,

“Aaron’s got a fracture in his wrist. It does not require surgery. Really, it’s just about bracing it and securing it for his comfort and safety. And then it’s about how functional he is. So, we don’t have the answers to that as we stand here today, but certainly I would imagine we’ll get some clarity as we push through the week. I think his experience really kind of aids in that. He’s the type of guy and has the type of profile that doesn’t require a lot of physical work in an effort to be ready to play, and that’s helpful.

In the meanwhile, certainly it will provide opportunities for Mason (Rudolph) and Will (Howard) to get quality work as we start the week.

And I think that’s the posture that we’re in. A little later in the week, we’ll take a look at Aaron. And again, as I mentioned, the variables are stabilizing it and making sure that he’s safe and he can protect himself, brace himself as he falls, et cetera. Pain tolerance, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue with Aaron. He wanted to go back in the game on Sunday.

And then lastly, obviously, how effective he can be.

Friday’s probably a big day in terms of some of those things. I know he’s working his tail off to be a component of this week. He and I talked yesterday. He expressed that directly. I’m of the mindset of supporting that, while at the same time I’ve got a healthy collective of guys as a team and as a unit to ready. In the meanwhile, that will be our mindset. We’ll have a great week’s work. Tomorrow, centered around Mason Rudolph and what he does.

We’ll see where the week leads us and we’ll take it day by day.”

So then, Aaron Rodgers, who won’t practice Wednesday, could be on the field later in the week as he pushes to play Sunday vs. the Bears. However, as Tomlin made clear it is just too early to tell if Rodgers will be ready in time to face Chicago. The team would love to have Aaron available but don’t want to push it and possibly make things worse.

Moreover, the Steelers are 6-4 and the Bears are 7-3; with both teams leading their respective divisions (but not by much). Therefore, this is a must-win for both franchises, making for a potentially entertaining showdown.
