Steelers’ Linebacker TJ Watt Needed Surgery On Collapsed Lung Suffered On Wednesday

He has become known as a great inebacker in the Steel City. Yet it was his brother, former linebacker extraordinaire JJ Watt, who posted about the condition of his little brother. Through his social media posts we learned that TJ Watt had a concerning lung issue earlier this week. As a result the Steeler’s linebacker, TJ Watt, needed surgery on a collapsed lung suffered on Wednesday. The cause of the partially collapsed lung was suffered during a dry needling session at the team facility. Therefore surgery was needed to repair the lung.

Yesterday, the team released the following statement regarding TJ’s health:

“T.J Watt is currently in a local hospital for further medical evaluation of his lung after experiencing discomfort at the practice facility on Wednesday. He will not be at practice on Thursday, and his status for Monday night’s game vs. Miami is in question. Coach Tomlin will provide more updates at the appropriate time.”

Now that it is Friday, we can say that the surgery was successful for Watt. Coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that T.J. Watt had returned home and was resting comfortably. Watt will not play in Monday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins, Tomlin said. He also stated that he did not know who was performing the treatment at the team facility. And had no additional details regarding the event.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a dry needling treatment is one or more thin, monofilament needles being inserted into a muscle trigger point. A trigger point is a local band of tight, irritable and dysfunctional muscle tissue. When dry needling is applied to an affected muscle or trigger point, it can decrease muscle tightness, increase blood flow and reduce pain. The needles remain in your muscle for a short period of time — between 10 seconds and 20 minutes — during treatment.

However, a partially collapsed lung is nothing to mess around with so it’s best for Watt not to play on Monday night. Hence Tomlin gave another update today regarding how Watt is doing stating:

“This is the update that I have,” said Tomlin. “He had a medical procedure yesterday. He’s been released from the hospital. He’s at home resting comfortably. So that’s good news from a medical standpoint.

“But from a participation standpoint, he’ll be described as out this week for Monday night.”

At this point, Tomlin doesn’t know how long Watt will be out and he appears to be on a week-to-week basis for now. While Watt is out, Pittsburgh will rely on multiple pass rushers such as Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer.
