Steelers And Browns Slugged It Out On Thursday Night Football
It was another AFC North headbanging battle on a cold and windy night. Even with the snow flurries the rivalry was hotter than ever. In spite of the weather the Steelers and Browns slugged it out on Thursday Night Football with one heck of an ending. Time to recap.
As has been the case this season, the Steelers offense was slow to get things going. They stalled on their opening drive along the way incurring a penalty, a run for no gain and the an eight-yard sack of Russell Wilson. They attempted a 58-yard field goal which was no good. That wasn’t surprising due to the swirling wind and light snow.
The Browns didn’t have any success in the first quarter either having to punt the ball twice. But things improved offensively in the second quarter with both teams scoring. The Steelers’ run game was stuffed by the Browns and they had to rely on Russell Wilson’s arm. He connected with Calvin Austin on a 46 yard pass and after gaining five more yards they had to settle for a 48-yard field goal. On their next drive, the Browns had more success running the ball and mixed it with several passes. It ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Nick Chubb. Two plays into their next drive, Wilson was sacked by Miles Garrett and fumbled the ball. It was recovered by Winston Reid and the Browns went on to kick a 34-yard field goal.
Garrett sacked Wilson three times in the first half. The Browns’ defense seemed to have him confused at times and didn’t allow their offense to get in sync. However, it has been typical of the Steelers to not score many points in the first half of their games. So the Browns led 10-3 at halftime.

After the third quarter began the sky opened up and the snow came down in torrents. During the quarter, sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung commented that she was having a hard time seeing on the sideline. So she didn’t know how Wilson was able to see when he was throwing the ball. At any rate the Browns’ Tillman fumbled the ball on their opening drive and then the Steelers turned the ball over on downs. The Browns went three and out and then the Steelers finally drove 71 yards and kicked a 2-yard field goal. It was a rough third quarter.
But the fourth quarter was an offensive explosion with the Browns scoring a touchdown. On 4th & goal Jameis Winston ran in for the two-yard score after having thrown a couple of double digit yards passes. The Steelers were down 6-18 but they moved the ball down field with Justin Fields ripping off a 30-yard run and a roughing the passer penalty. Jaylen Warren ran the ball in for the three-yard touchdown cutting the deficit to five. Winston was sacked and fumbled the ball which the Steelers recovered. Wilson found Austin for the 23-yard touchdown. Steelers were up 19-18.
Browns Take Down The Steelers
Then disaster struck when Winston was intercepted. It looked like it was going to be the same old Browns again, finding ways to lose the game. But then the Steelers went four and out leaving the Browns with 3:29 left on the clock. It took 12 plays to go 45 yards but they scored the touchdown to take the lead!
As you guessed it… it was Hail Mary time. This season there’s been a couple teams that have found success with this play. Could the Steelers do magic? With :06 on the clock Wilson heaved a ball to the endzone but it was batted down. So the Browns held on for the win taking down the division leading Pittsburgh Steelers.
It was one of those nights where the Steelers missed some opportunities. And they didn’t have their typical comeback in the second half this time. Whereas Jameis Winston and the rest of the Browns were having fun and making plays when needed. Cleveland was COLD-BLOODED on the field and played with heart. It was a sloppy blizzard game but still entertaining. Congrats to the Browns.
