Spurs Victor Wembanyama Wants to Bring Competitiveness Back to All-Star Game
Well this certainly is music to all of our basketball ears. For years the All-Star Game has seemed less and less entertaining. An issue the league has been aware of as the NBA has worked to tweak the game’s format in order to bring back; or gain a bigger audience. Well, one San Antonio player feels like he has the winning formula. After defeating the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, the Spurs Victor Wembanyama explained why he wants to bring the competitiveness back to the All-Star game.
So simple right? It’s what NBA fans have been yelling from their living rooms for years. The ASG has been missing real competition. There’s little defense or players challenging each other on the court. Wemby strongly believes this should change.
When asked why he would like to see more effort from players during the All-Star Game; Victor mentions,
“That comes from the fact that I’ve seen the All-Star game and obviously, it hasn’t been competitive. I’ve always thought myself that if I was in there, I’m never stepping on to the court to lose or not caring. Just like at home, I’m never stepping into a board game not caring if I’m going to lose. So I’m thinking it’s (not) ok to lose, so I’m going to be out there, I might as well win.”
Wembanyama definitely knows a thing or two about winning. He showed his level of competition helping the Spurs blowout the Lakers 136-108; on the purple and gold’s own court. In LA’s defense, basically all of their top players didn’t play. But Wemby’s performance is still one for the books. Victor Wembanyama scored 40 points last night in just 26 minutes of action.

According to OptaStats, that’s the fewest minutes played by any NBA player in a 40-point game since Houston’s Sleepy Floyd had 40 points in 24 minutes on February 26, 1991. The man was unstoppable. Wemby scored 17 PTS in a row for the Spurs in the first quarter. He put up 25 points in just the first quarter!
The Athletic’s Dan Woike followed up on the above stat. Woike reveals, “Per Stathead, since 1976-77, only Sleepy Floyd and Patrick Ewing have scored at least 40 points in less than 27 minutes. Victor Wembanyama did it tonight in 26:06.” Hopefully Wemby is able to bring this same competitive vibe to All-Stars this year. Would be fun to see.
