Spain’s Women’s World Cup Title Marred By A Kiss
Spain defeated England and won it’s first FIFA Women’s World Cup title. However, fans are asking if Spain’s Women’s World Cup title has been marred by a kiss. It would certainly appear that way after Jennifer Hermoso was forcibly kissed by Luis Rubiales. Hermoso helped her team win the title and was awarded the Silver Ball at the World Cup. Rubiales is president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
The kiss took place at the ceremony after the victory. Hermoso said that she felt vulnerable and that the kiss was not consensual. Rubiales took the opposite stance stating that it was mutual. Many had expected that Rubiales would step down from his position as president. However, he refused to do so and has vowed to fight against the claims of inappropriateness. The RFEF is fully supporting the president in his fight.
The RFEF has said that Hermoso is lying and tried to coerce her into corroborating the president’s version of the kiss. They further refused to take action against Rubiales. Instead they released a statement and a series of photos. They were making an effort to prove that Rubiales did not force the kiss. Instead they claim that Hermoso kissed him and would not release him right away.
Naturally the women were not happy with the response. The World Cup winners said they would not play for the national team until Rubialis is gone. But the RFEF hit back by threatening legal action against Hermoso. At this point FIFA has suspended Rubialis for 90 days. Who knows what will happen after that.
Spain’s Women’s World Cup title Marred By A Kiss
I think the RFEF is displaying an alarming amount of tone deafness in this situation. Even if they really believed that the kiss was mutual why not at least address Hermoso’s concerns? If the women’s team fully supports their teammate should they not at least investigate the matter? Calling someone a liar and threatening legal action is not helpful at all.
There has been an outpouring of support for Hermoso worldwide. And that is something to be pleased about. However, the men who are in charge of sports organization need to improve. Drastically and quickly. Women should not be treated with such a lack of respect and dignity. Why would you kiss an athlete after a victory? There are a lot of ways to offer congratulations. Kissing shouldn’t be one of them. Unless you get permission first at least.
