South Carolina Victorious In The WBB National Championship

She gave it everything she had but Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes couldn’t overcome the Gamecocks. South Carolina was victorious in the WBB National Championship game. Coach Dawn Staley and her team went undefeated in the season. They capped off their perfect season with an 87-75 victory over Iowa. And in doing so became the tenth Division I team to not lose a game throughout the entire season. Despite losing five of their starters from the previous season they beat the team that bounced them from the national semifinals last season. Quite the accomplishment.

As was mentioned Clark gave it all she had in the game. She even scored a record 18 points in the first quarter and 30 points overall. Clark has declared for the WNBA draft which will be taking place on April 15th at 7:30 EST/4:30 PST on ESPN. And therefore she ends her collegiate career as the leading scorer in NCAA Division I history with 3,951 points. Having that stat is in line with what coach Staley said regarding Clark:

“I personally want to thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport. She carried a heavy load for our sport,” Staley said. “She’s going to lift that league (WNBA) up as well. Caitlin Clark if you’re out there you’re one of the GOATs of our game. We appreciate you.”

However, let’s not lose sight of what the lady Gamecocks accomplished as well. They have won three titles in the last year and two of the past three. So yeah I think we can call them a dynasty. And things just get better for South Carolina because they have several talented underclassmen. Such as freshman Tessa Johnson who led her team with 19 points off the bench.

This team is built to win for years to come. And we can’t leave out Kamila Cardoso the heart and soul of the team. She finished the game with 15 points, 17 rebounds, and three blocks. As if that wasn’t enough she was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding player. Her contributions to the team are much appreciated by coach Staley.

“Kamilla Cardoso was not going to let us lose a game in the NCAA Tournament,” Staley said. “She played through an injury, she played like one of the top picks in the WNBA draft.”

There is no shortage of talent in women’s college basketball. And the WNBA is set to receive an infusion of that talent one week from today. I hope, the new fan enthusiasm for women’s college basketball will spill over to the professional league. All the ladies deserve the recognition and an increase in pay. But in the meantime, congratulations to the South Carolina Gamecocks!
