Sophie Cunningham and Natasha Howard Joining Indiana Fever
Oh snap… things are getting even more interesting. The W is finally doing what many have wanted them to do; which is spread out the talent. So many moves have already been made that are making teams stronger, more balanced as well as competitive. We really like what is happening over in Indy. Over the last few days it was confirmed that Sophie Cunningham and Natasha Howard are joining the Indiana Fever in order to play alongside league superstar, Caitlin Clark.
But the Fever has been busy all week. They are a team that got to the playoffs last season, however, that result although nice; is not good enough. They are an organization that wants to win.
So then, their first order of business was resigning Kelsey Mitchell. Kelsey Mitchell signed a one-year deal with Indiana at the supermax ($249,244). From there, the franchise decided to bring in a proven veteran champ (Howard) and another guard that could potentially be a 3-point threat. Cunningham over her career shoots about 40% from the 3-point range.
ESPN’s Alexa Philippou took a moment from hosting the WNBA free agency special to confirm more moves by the Fever. She reveals,
“On Natasha Howard (re)joining the Indiana Fever, the team’s first big move this free agency aside from re-signing Kelsey Mitchell earlier this week.
Breaking: Three-time WNBA champion Natasha Howard will sign with the Indiana Fever as a free agent, sources told ESPN.
The former DPOY and 2x-time All-Star returns to the franchise that drafted her, bolstering the Fever’s frontcourt and bringing veteran experience.”

Great news. Howard’s veteran presence will be a real asset for Indiana. Nevertheless, now for that three-way trade that went down. Which also resulted in the Fever getting Cunningham. Philippou adds,

Sophie will have a lot to prove. She had a breakout season in ‘22 but has not displayed the same magic as of late. While her defense is notable, the Fever will give her more opportunity to really work on showcasing her shooting, like her 3’s. If she is efficient from deep it will force teams to choose between guarding her or Clark. Therefore, Howard and Cunningham could prove to be really good fits for Clark and company. This upcoming season we will see.
