Some Things That Happened On Sunday During NFL Week 9
I can’t believe we’re already onto Week 9 of the 2024 NFL Schedule. But as always there were plenty of things to talk about for the Sunday games. We’ll fill you in on some things that happened on Sunday during NFL Week 9. First of all the The Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers were on a bye week. Several quarterbacks had excellent completion rates like Kirk Cousins, Lamar Jackson, and Justin Herbert. But let’s start with the Cowboys visiting Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons.
Cowboys @ Falcons – Kirk Cousins was accurate all day and completing 19/24 for 222 yards and three touchdowns. However, the Falcons’ defense made life uncomfortable for Dak Prescott with their pass rush. Ultimately, he left the game in the second half with a hamstring injury. He was replaced by Cooper Rush who made a valiant effort to keep the Cowboys in the game. CeeDee Lamb spent some time out of the game with a shoulder injury but did return. However, the Falcons were efficient in all three phases of the games. It was a complete victory as they defeated the Cowboys 21-27.
Broncos @ Ravens – The Broncos came crashing back down to earth with a drubbing by the Ravens. Bo Nix was intercepted on the second play of their opening drive. Lamar Jackson had his fourth career game with a perfect passer rating. He had as many touchdowns (three) as incompletions going 16/19 for 280 yards. His WR Zay Flowers was also on a tear, scoring two touchdowns and piling up over 100 yards in the first half. The Ravens relied on RB Derrick Henry in the second half. The Broncos hung tough in the first half but were overwhelmed by the Ravens offense in the second half and were routed 10-41.
Some Things That Happened On Sunday During NFL Week 9
Dolphins @ Bills – It was a grueling AFC East divisional battle between the Dolphins and Bills. The Dolphins had a bit of an edge over the Bills in the first half of the game. It helped that QB Tua Tagovailoa had an impressive performance, completing a single-game, career-best 89.3% of his passes. He went 25-of-28 for 231 yards and two touchdowns. But on the Bills side everybody ate. 10 different Bills have TD receptions this season with QB Josh Allen passing the ball around. However, the game came down to the wire as the Bills moved the ball to the Miami 43-yard line. Tyler Bass kicked a 61-yard game-winning field goal with the final score being 27-30.
Saints @ Panthers – With Bryce Young was at the helm again this week. He finished the game 16-of-26 for 171 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. His rookies, Ja’Tavion Sanders and Jalen Coker, stepped up. The Saints were already decimated by injuries and then lost Chris Olave due to a concussion. He was carted off the field on a backboard. Yet the Saints won the time of possession battle and outrushed the Panthers 197-80. In the end, Young led his team on a touchdown drive with 2:18 left in the game taking the lead. The Saints still had a chance to win the game but couldn’t convert on fourth down. Carolina ended their five-game losing streak with a 22-23 win over the Saints.
Early Sunday Games Notes
Raiders @ Bengals – Gardner Minshew was benched again. Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson had four sacks today and leads the league with 11 sacks. However, the Raiders offensive line has been decimated with injuries. And the defense couldn’t get Joe Burrow and his offense off the field. Burrow extended plays, completed nearly 70 percent of his passes and threw five touchdown passes. Desmond Ridder replaced Minshew in the third quarter and engineered a touchdown drive late in the fourth. But the Raiders were beaten 24-41.
Chargers @ Browns – Miles Garrett had three sacks in the first half. However, the Browns’ defense gave up big plays on the outside. Jameis Winston kept playing with fire as he had too many passes that could have been interceptions. He eventually got burned when he was intercepted in the third quarter. However, the Chargers couldn’t take advantage and punted. The Browns continued to throw the ball despite not having success. They gained just 58 yards in the first half and put together one field goal drive. Conversely QB Justin Herbert found his receivers for big plays. The Chargers won 27-10.
Commanders @ Giants – Jayden Daniels was back to face the Commanders NFC East divisional rival New York Giants. Six of the last eight matchups between them have been decided by eight points or less. Giants’ QB Daniel Jones completed 20 of 26 passes and posted a 119.7 passer rating. Their defense limited Terry McLaurin, Washington’s best wide receiver, to just two catches in the game, and the Commanders to two field goals in the second half. However, they still weren’t able to make enough plays to win the game. The Commanders forced the Giants to use all of their timeouts. Daniels kneeled on the ball and secured the 27-22 victory.
More Notes On Early Sunday Action
Patriots @ Titans – Drake Maye cleared the concussion protocol and was back on the field. But the Patriots got off to a slow start. Their defense gave up big plays and the Titans took the lead. They also attacked the Patriots 29th ranked run defense. Maye had his share of mistakes but led the Patriots on a game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter and forced the game to overtime. The Titans scored a field goal on their opening drive. Whereas on the Patriots’ possession, Maye threw an interception and the Patriots lost 20-17.
Bears @ Cardinals – The Bears definitely struggled today. Their defense allowed 213 rushing yards while their running game was limited to 70 yards on 23 carries. However, the Bears’ defense punched the ball out of receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.’s hand after a 21-yard reception. They converted the turnover to a field goal. And the game was a nightmare for QB Caleb Williams as he was sacked six times and didn’t score a touchdown. With the 9-29 win over the Bears, the Cardinals sit atop the NFC West.
Jaguars @ Eagles – The Eagles dominated the Jaguars in the first half putting up 16 points by halftime. Jacksonville gained 31 total net yards on 6 possessions in the first half and finished with just 215 total net yards. However, in the third quarter the Jaguars scored two third-quarter touchdowns in :14. Trevor Lawrence scored on a one-yard run. Then Saquon Barkley fumbled the ball which Jacksonville recovered and returned for a touchdown (Travon Walker, 35 yards). But the Eagles scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. In the end, Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean intercepted Lawrence in the end zone with 1:38 remaining on first-and-10 from the Eagles 13 to clinch the 23-28 victory.
Sunday Afternoon Game Action Notes
Lions @ Packers – The Packers killed themselves with penalties, dropped passes and other mistakes. QB Jordan Love played through a groin injury and was 23-of-39 for 273 yards. But he threw an interception that went for a touchdown making the first half score 17-3. Josh Jacobs rushed for 89 yards in the first half but was shut down in the second half, finishing the game with 95 yards. However, the Packers did cut the Lions’ lead to 24-14 with 3:49 remaining after Emanuel Wilson’s first career TD run and a successful two-point conversion pass to Watson. But that was as far as their comeback got after a failed onside kick. Detroit ran out the clock to secure its seventh win of the year and send Green Bay into its Week 10 bye at 6-3.
Rams @ Seahawks – The fourth quarter was crazy. Geno Smith was in the red zone twice and threw an interception on both occasions. I have no idea who he was throwing to unless he forgot that he played for the Seahawks and not the Rams. I like Geno Smith and I’m a big fan of his career comeback but late in this game he wasn’t making good decisions with the ball. However, the Seahawks defense kept fighting and getting turnovers of their own keeping them in the game. They were down 20-13 when Smith connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 14-yard touchdown to tie the game. In overtime, the Seahawks got the ball first and got it to the Rams’ 16-yard line. They ran on 3rd & 1 and didn’t get it. They chose not to kick the field goal and went for it on fourth down but couldn’t convert. It took four plays for the Ram’s to go down the field and score the winning touchdown.
Notes About The Sunday Night Football Game
Colts @ Vikings – The Vikings offense was held scoreless in the first half. The Colts’ defense was swarming, throwing themselves all around the field making plays. At times the Vikings looked lost, not knowing what to do. And kicker Will Reichard missed two field goals in the second quarter. Sam Darnold was sacked and fumbled the ball leading to the Colts defense running it back for a touchdown.
But things improved for the Vikings in the second half scoring two unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter. However, things turned ugly again in the fourth quarter with each quarterback throwing an interception; Darnold was sacked once and Flacco twice. However, the Vikings put together a nice drive adding on another touchdown. The Colts tried an onside kick that was caught by WR Justin Jefferson. Darnold took a knee and the Vikings won 13-21.
