Snowboarding Legend Shaun White Launching New Sports League
He once was dubbed the flying tomato due to his snowboarding prowess. However, he wasn’t fond of that nickname so we’ll just stick with Shaun. And Mr. White recently appeared on the Today Show to talk about his latest venture. He let it be known that he is launching a new sports league called the Snow League. It’s the first ever professional league entirely dedicated to snowboarding and freeskiing halfpipe competition. NBC Sports has signed on as the official broadcast partner for Season One of The Snow League.
White is a three-time Olympic gold medalist who regularly stunned the world with his big-air tricks on the halfpipe. He is the most well-known athlete of his sport and now he wants to help the next generation to thrive. When it comes to professional snowboarding White said he wants to change everything about it because it needs something new. He believes the sport needs to be different, to have an elevated professionalism to it that hasn’t been seen in the sport before. The commentary regarding the sport will be different, the way the athletes are going to be talked about and even the venues will be different. White also wants to have the best half pipes in the world. Believing that will result in getting the best tricks and the most out of the athletes.
White went on to say:
“I’m just so excited to provide my fellow winter sports athletes with a premier global tour that’s going to showcase their talents, tell their stories and in turn accelerate their careers and global recognition. We’ve reimagined competitive formats for edge-of-you-seat experiences that will be broadcast worldwide form iconic winter resort destinations. The next generation of superstar athletes are ready to rise. Welcome to the future of winter sports competition.”

This new league will also offer excellent prize money including equal pay for men and women. White recognizes that he was more fortunate than his fellow athletes when it came to income earned. The prize money will allow athletes to focus more on the sport. Furthermore, the Snow League will be part of the Olympic qualifying pipeline. Athletes will accumulate points from Snow League events that will lead to the Olympics.
When asked if he had any plans to unretire he remained coy, not saying yes or no. But the newly engaged White said he would have to ask his bride-to-be, actress Nina Dobrev, first.
The inaugural event will go down in Aspen, Colorado on March 7-8 and will be live on Peacock followed by an encore presentation on NBC Sports. Athletes will be competing for a total prize purse exceeding $1.5 million.
