Simone Biles Wins Gold and Jade Carey a Bronze in Vault Final

The GOLDEN GIRLS strike again! Team USA dominates during yet another gymnastics event  at the 2024 Paris Olympics. And places two of its talented members on the podium. Simone Biles wins the gold and Jade Carey grabs a bronze in the Vault Final.

Just a day or so ago, all eyes were on Suni Lee and Simone Biles for the All-Around competition. Both ladies were fantastic on all four events of the rotation: Balance Beam, Uneven Bars, Vault and Floor Exercise. It was a beyond tight competition but Suni and Simone kept putting down the hammer with a plethora of near flawless routines. Earning a gold (Simone) and a bronze (Suni) medal. Could Team USA do it again and come away with multiple medals?

Well, to do so they would have to bring out their vaults with the highest difficulty starts. Since the competition would once again be fierce. The USA’s biggest rival and competitor clearly came from a gymnast from Brazil, Rebeca Andrade. Andrade is well known for her power, precision as well as exceptional control of her landings. Therefore to win, near perfection would be required.

During the Vault final every gymnast performs two vaults. Out of Andrade, Carey and Biles; Simone is up first. Simone begins with her signature vault that is named after herself; the Yurchenko double pike, or “Biles II;” the hardest vault in the final, and lands it.  Not a perfect stuck landing but very good. What’s noticeable is her body position through the air, every twist and flip is not over-rotated, but exact.

Simone’s second vault is just as good. The “Cheng,” which involves a half-turn onto the table, followed by a 1.5 twist into the air. She hits the table at full speed and pushes off getting insane height. The intense power of this vault sends her flying (she definitely went a bit farther in distance than the other athletes); but she is in full control and barely misses a stuck landing. She scores a total of 15.300 from both of her vaults.

When Andrade’s turn comes up, she is poised and ready. While her difficulty start may not have been as high as Simone’s, both her vaults are amazing! She really gives Biles a run for her money. With both vaults containing some tough flip combinations. She sticks the landing with one and lands the other with the smallest of hops like Biles.

Nevertheless, due to the extra flip in Simone’s vault, Rebeca comes up just short of a 15 point score. In the end both of her vaults total 14.966.

Last to go for the Americans, is Jade Carey. She looks calm. She looks ready.

First vault… she explodes down towards the table and pushes off with all her might. Her form through the air is FLAWLESS and she barely misses sticking the landing. One down.

On her second, she is just as consistent. You can barely notice any mistakes. And the judges reward her for performance and efforts. She scores a 14.466, taking home a bronze!

What a morning! This is now Simone’s third gold medal of the 2024 Summer Games. And it is also her 7th Olympic gold medal and 10th overall Olympic medal. Congratulations to her and Jade on adding more hardware to their collections.
