Simone Biles Honored With ESPY Best Comeback Performance
When a person continues to do great things sometimes you run out of words to describe their actions. And I think that’s where we’re at concerning this amazing gymnast. Last night Simone Biles was honored with the ESPY Best Comeback Performance award. It makes sense because after a two-year hiatus from the sport she is back and better than ever. After taking a break for her mental health, Biles is performing now as if she never left at all.
She has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Olympic team for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Easily taking the top spot in the qualification trial. Prior to that she won the All-Around U.S. Gymnastics Championship 2024. Once again securing the no. 1 spot with an almost six point lead over the No. 2 finisher Skye Blakely. Biles also placed first in every event exercise – Balance Beam, Floor Exercise, Uneven Bars, and Vault. However, her comeback began at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championship in October 2023. In that event she won gold medals for the Balance Beam and Floor Exercise, notching her 29th and 30th career medals.
In her comeback quest she has taken a new approach. “I think blocking out a lot of the outside noise and not letting that bother me and also doing things that I really enjoy doing and not saying yes to everything,” said Biles of how she’s doing things differently in 2023. “I had to learn how to say ‘no,’ that’s usually the first response now. If it doesn’t fit into my time or my schedule, then I’m not going to do it, and I’m not going to force it. I think that helps a lot.

Biles was not able to attend the award show on Thursday night in Los Angeles. “She’s busy obviously, getting ready to bring all those gold medals home,” said presenter Bryan Tyree Henry while honoring Biles from afar with NFL star Myles Garrett. “Simone, you are an inspiration… you are a champion and the only person you have anything to prove to is Simone.”
In addition to the ESPY, Biles also won the 2024 Laureus World Sports Award for Comeback of the Year. Previously, she won Best Female Athlete ESPY in 2017 following the Rio Olympics. And Biles received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Joe Biden in 2022, becoming the youngest person ever to receive the honor. So winning this ESPY is not really a surprise and very much deserved.
Now we can all sit back and watch her work in the Olympics coming up later this month.
