Simone Biles Claimed Top Spot For The Olympics

She is the cream of the crop when it comes to women’s gymnastics. Simone Biles claimed the top spot for the U.S. Olympic Trials. And now she is headed to her third Olympics, the fourth female gymnast to go to three Olympics. And at 27 years old she is the oldest gymnast to compete in the Olympics since 1952. But don’t let the age fool you, Biles is at the top of her game as proven by her first place finish.

On day 1 of the trials, she had a less than desirable performance on the balance beam. When she vaulted onto the beam she was off balance and the rest of the routine was choppy. She got through it and was clearly not happy with the performance. However, she executed a powerful floor exercise which catapulted her into first place.

On day 3 she kept her lead and finished the event with an overall score of 117.225! The next closest competitor who came in second was Suni Lee with a score of 111.675. However, this was a very competitive and fierce competition among all the women gymnasts. In third place was Jordan Chiles with 111.425 and in fourth place Jade Carey with 111.350. So there was no room for error with such close scores.

All of the women competed down to the last and it was a very difficult decision for the judges to make. But ultimately the judges chose Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera. The alternates will be Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong. This Olympic team will be the oldest and most decorated U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team in history.

After the team was named, all the ladies had an opportunity to express themselves. They were grateful for the support of their coaches, families and friends. But they also expressed gratitude for one another and for Biles in particular. She jokingly referred to herself as “grandma” and is happy to be a mentor to her fellow teammates.

And we also have to give a shout out to the men’s gymnastic team. It was only 0.2 difference in the final overall score. Fred Richard beat out Brody Malone with a score of 170.50 while Malone finished with 170.300. Joining them in Paris will be Paul Juda, Asher Hong, Stephen Nedoroscik and alternates Shane Wiskus and Khoi Young.

Congratulations to the men and women gymnastics teams. The Olympics will begin on July 26 and the gymnastics competition will open on July 27 for the men and July 28 for the women.
