Simeon Rice Being Inducted Into Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring Of Honor

He was a menace on the field leaving quarterbacks quaking in their cleats. Together with fellow teammates John Lynch, Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks they formed a nightmare for offenses around the league. He distinguished himself as one of the greatest pass-rushers in the history of the franchise. So today the team announced that Simeon Rice is being inducted into the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor at Raymond James Stadium. Rice will become the 16th person inducted into the Ring of Honor. There will be a halftime ceremony when Tampa Bay plays the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, November 30.

He initially joined the league as the third overall pick in the 1996 draft of the Arizona Cardinals. Spending five seasons with the Cardinals, he became an unrestricted free agent and signed with Tampa in 2001. In his second season with the Buccaneers, he led the team in sacks and surpassed double digits in each of his first five seasons with Tampa. With that accomplishment he became the fifth player in league history to surpass 10 sacks in five consecutive seasons for the same team.

Buccaneers Owner and Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer praised Rice’s contributions to the organization saying:

“During his Hall of Fame-worthy 12-year career, Simeon Rice established himself as one of the most dominant pass rushers in NFL history and is immensely deserving of his place as the 16th member in the Buccaneers Ring of Honor,” said Buccaneers Owner/Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer. “Simeon arrived in Tampa prior to the 2001 season and immediately elevated our defense into one of the greatest of all-time. He left an indelible mark on our franchise, and we look forward to honoring and celebrating his great career this upcoming season.”

From 1998-2005, including five seasons in a Tampa Bay uniform, Rice racked up a league-leading 101.5 sacks. Surpassing contemporaries such as current Pro Football Hall of Fame members Michael Strahan and Jason Taylor. With Rice in his second season with the Buccaneers the team led the NFL in a long list of categories. Including points allowed (12.3) and yards allowed (252.8) per game. Rice led that defense with 15.5 sacks during the regular season. Then had four more in the Bucs’ postseason run to their first Super Bowl title, including two in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Rice was a sack master for two different teams. And the team website pointed out his quarterback hunting ability saying: “Of the 122 sacks that Simeon Rice collected during his illustrious NFL career. 121 came when he was wearing the uniforms of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Arizona Cardinals. It is fitting, then, that both franchises will be represented when Rice takes his place in the Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor at Raymond James Stadium this fall.”

Prior to him was cornerback great, Rondé Barber in 2019, who spent his entire 16-year career as a Buccaneer. Other members include: Lee Roy Selmon, John McKay, Jimmie Giles, Paul Gruber, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Mike Alstott, Doug Williams, John Lynch, Malcolm Glazer, Jon Gruden, Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin.
