Sidney McLaughlin-Levrone Ruled Ineligible For Diamond League

After putting on a magical performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics we wanted to see more of her. The next big event taking place is the Diamond League. However, it was reported that Sidney McLaughlin-Levrone has been ruled ineligible for the Diamond League. And what is the Diamond League? It’s an annual series of elite track and field athletic competitions comprising fifteen of the best invitational athletics meetings. The series sits in the top tier of the World Athletics (formerly known as the IAAF) one-day meeting competitions.

The inaugural season was in 2010. It was designed to replace the IAAF Golden League, which had been held annually since 1998. The full sponsorship name is the Wanda Diamond League. The result of an agreement with Wanda Group that was announced in December 2019. All meetings since the event’s inauguration have been held in the Northern Hemisphere in spring and summer months. In line with the traditional international track and field season.

So now with that out of the way why was she ruled ineligible? The Diamond League series announced that McLaughlin-Levrone,  did not meet eligibility requirements to be offered a “Global Wild Card” under the series rules.

Series CEO Petr Stastny told specialist track and field website LetsRun.com: “It is not about allowing a specific athlete to compete or not. It is about rules and criteria which must be fulfilled by all to [become] eligible to compete at the [Diamond League] Final. “Ms LcLaughlin-Levrone does not fulfill those criteria, either by accumulating enough points or receiving a wild card.”

“The final leg of the Diamond League is not an invitational meeting, and any athlete proposed for a Global Wild Card must have competed at least in one of our events during this season,” Stastny added.

So where does that leave the Olympic champion and world record holder over 400m hurdles? The Brussels Diamond League meet organizers arranged two special races for her. However, she will not be part of the Diamond League finals. The two races have been scheduled to honor Sydney Mclaughlin-Levrone’s stellar accomplishments in the 400m hurdles race at the Paris Olympics. She will be participating in the 400m and 200m.

Her coach Bobby Kersee explained that they’ve been deliberately limiting her competitions to ensure she stays well-rested. And in peak condition for the events she chooses to run. Perhaps due to this incident she may decide to participate in more events to qualify in the future. At any rate, in spite of the ineligibility ruling, fans will still get to see her run.
