Should The Los Angeles Rams Be Worried About Matthew Stafford's Back Injury

Should The Los Angeles Rams Be Worried About Matthew Stafford’s Back Injury?

Every team needs a franchise quarterback if they want to have real success. He became that quarterback when he led the team to Super Bowl LVI in February 2022. However, he is entering his  17th NFL campaign at age 37 and has missed all of training camp thus far. So should the Los Angeles Rams be worried about quarterback Matthew Stafford’s back injury? Head coach Sean McVay had indicated that Stafford was nearing a return to practice. He was expected to begin on Monday but that didn’t happen.

As reported on the team’s website, Stafford didn’t feel good enough to practice yesterday:

“More than anything, I feel for a guy that I really care about that wants to be out there more than anything else,” McVay said. “We’re going to be smart. But he didn’t feel good enough, and we didn’t think it was the right thing to do based on how he woke up feeling today.”

McVay said Stafford “had a great workout” and “felt good” on Saturday, “but then you come into today (Monday), it doesn’t feel great, and so didn’t think it was the right decision to be able to push him.”

Of course every team wants their franchise quarterback on the field. But for the Rams it’s even more critical as they are considered legit Super Bowl contenders this upcoming season. And they also went out and got top wide receiver Davante Adams. And after dealing with injuries last season they will also have pass-catching phenom Puka Nacua ready to go. But caution is the word of the day as the team seeks to handle Stafford with care. Stafford is dealing with an aggravated disc, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. He has also been receiving epidurals to deal with the pain.

Should The Los Angeles Rams Be Worried About Matthew Stafford’s Back Injury?

As pointed out by Jeffri Chadiha, senior writer for NFL.com, health woes played a major role in Los Angeles starting 1-4 last season. And Stafford wasn’t one of the players dealing with significant issues. No doubt they want to keep it that way this season too. McVay was asked if surgery was an option and he said, “that hasn’t been a conversation that we’ve had.”  He was then asked if Stafford would be playing if the Rams were playing a regular season game this week, McVay said “I don’t know that,” but “I think he still probably would be able to play just based on how he feels.”

So at this point no firm conclusions can be drawn about Stafford’s health. We’ll see what happens when the Texans head to L.A. in Week 1 to face the Rams.
