Shootout In the NFC South On Thursday Night

Both offenses had their way as they put on a scoring cornucopia. It appeared that receivers on the Falcons and Buccaneers were getting open regularly. And thus we had a shootout in the NFC south on Thursday Night Football. For instance Kyle Pitts had multiple catches and double digits in yards as opposed to having none last week. However, neither team had much success with their running games. Except for Rachaad White who broke out on a 56-yard gain against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Buccaneers defense got some pressure on Kirk Cousins and sacked him twice in the first half. On one drive the Falcons were stopped by the Buccaneers and had to kick a field goal. Koo missed the 46- yard field goal but had a second chance due to a defensive offside penalty. But he missed the 41-yard field goal attempt as well. However, in the second quarter he knocked through a 54-yard field goal.

The Falcons defense didn’t have as much success stopping the Buccaneers offense. They couldn’t generate the necessary pressure to slow down Baker Mayfield. He threw for 3 touchdowns and 153 yards during the first half. He made good use of his one-two punch combo of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Tampa Bay also had a kickoff returned for 53 yards giving them a short field. The Falcons who weren’t missing tackles were being run over by Tucker as he rumbled down the field. Tampa Bay took advantage and converted it to a touchdown. At halftime the score was 24-17 with the Buccaneers leading. The Falcons honored former QB Matt Ryan by inducting him into their ring of honor during halftime.

In the second half the Buccaneers got their running game going. But it didn’t stop the Falcons from pulling within three points of the lead. At one point they had another field goal chance which was blocked. Thereafter Irving had the ball punched out of his arm which the Falcons recovered. However, Cousins was sacked and then threw an interception.

Atlanta’s defense forced the Buccaneers to punt and with 1:14 left on the clock the Falcons drove down the field. This time Koo was good for the 52-yard field goal sending the game into overtime. Atlanta won the toss and again drove down the field. It took five plays, 70 yards and 1:15 for Cousins to find Hodge for the 45-yard touchdown. The Falcons won the game 30-36 and now share the top spot in the division.
