She Is Back and Still Winning-Simone Biles Records 8th U.S. Gymnastics Championship

A ridiculously talented athlete took a two-year hiatus after the Tokyo Olympics. This past Sunday she definitively declared she is back and still winning. Who is this person? None other than the fabulous Simon Biles. On August 27, 2023 she won a record eighth U.S. Gymnastics Championship. Alfred Jochim previously held the record with seven Men’s titles between 1925-1933.

Clearly winning eight titles is an unheard of accomplishment. She set the tone for the gymnastics competition by performing the Yurchenkco double pike on the vault apparatus. To say it’s a difficult vault is an understatement. In 2021, she was the first woman to even attempt it in competition. She did it again on Friday night and scored a 9.8 all while making it look effortless.

What is amazing is that Biles vaulted (yes pun intended) to the top of women’s gymnastics 10 years ago. Then an optimistic 16 year old, she proved to herself and everyone else that she was ready for the big stage. Now the 26-year old Biles is a newlywed and considered the GOAT of her sport. Go ask her husband Jonathan Owens of the Green Bay Packers. And it’s not an exaggeration to think of her as the greatest of all time. She has regularly gone above and beyond the typical boundaries for a gymnast.

Her performances were so advanced that the scoring system was changed. As Insider.com reported: “The five-time Olympic medalist is so dominant that the rules of elite gymnastics intentionally put her at a scoring disadvantage. The International Gymnastics Federation says that restrictions to Biles’ potential point totals in competition are meant to dissuade other athletes from taking dangerous risks.”

Or to put it another way, she was so much better than everyone else that they tried to hobble her from outscoring the competition. Even Simone said in her docuseries, ‘Simone vs. Herself’, “I’m almost 99.9% sure if any other athlete were to do it besides me, they would give it correct credit. But since I’m already way ahead of everybody, they want to pull it back.”

Despite the scoring issue, Simone has managed to set all kinds of World Championship records. She has the most medals, the most gold medals, and the most all-around titles.

Right now she is working towards competing in her third Olympics in Paris 2024. If she competes there she could become the most decorated U.S. Gymnast in Olympics history. Currently she is tied with Shannon Miller for the most Olympic medals. Shannon was a leader of the 1996 Olympic team. They were such a great group of women that they were dubbed the Magnificent 7. The 1996 team demonstrated an enormous amount of excellence and it looks like Biles is set to continue the tradition.

I’m happy Simone is back and still winning big. Moving forward, she will likely perform even more stunning acrobatics and I’m here for it. Congratulations to Simone, keep on flipping!
