Shaq Says Dunks and Lowering the Rim Will Grow the WNBA

The W absolutely exploded in 2024. Doing numbers in every single area and aspect of the league. Yet, the goal is to continue this upward momentum. A former NBA player and businessman is weighing in on this topic and believes he possesses the perfect solution. In an interview on the “Unapologetically Angel” podcast, Shaq says that dunks and lowering the rim will grow the WNBA even faster.

Basically, what Shaq is indicating, is that the entertainment side of the league needs to improve. He feels that there are some players that really stand out and are fun to watch. However, outside of those few individuals the league in his estimation, falls flat.

Over the years some have complained that the women miss too many shots and layups; and that’s why they do not tune in on the regular. Therefore, the logical solution could seem like to just lower the rim. But then, there are others that feel things should just be left alone. So then, what is the answer?

In truthfulness, the league really needs to look at the market they are trying to attract. If it is indeed more men, then they need to appeal to the male demographic by utilizing the elements that THEY enjoy watching during games. Of course, there are women that can dunk even now and have dunked over the years. Everyone from Lisa Leslie to Candace Parker and Britney Griner. However, did their dunking abilities grow the league? Not as much as executives would have liked, or at least to the levels experienced recently.

Yet their doing so did make games very exciting. Since it’s fun to see players fly through the air and slam a ball in for a score. Let’s just be honest… dunks make the highlight reels because they are splashy plays.

Nevertheless, now that there are more eyes on the league than ever before; it couldn’t hurt to see if such a scoring technique could wow audiences and increase the WNBA’s popularity even more.

But, we digress. Let’s get back to Shaq. What exactly did he have to say to Angel Reese and WNBA? Shaq states,

But I have a solution for that, but no one is going to like my solution. So let me explain why I came up with this solution first.

In women’s beach volleyball. Let’s just say that the net is 10 feet; for women’s it’s lowered just a little bit. I’m not saying lower it to 9.5 feet. But just 9.9. Yeah [just so women can dunk].

But listen, thats the only difference. Watch I’m going to show you something and this is for your editors, right? We got shooters. Y’all got shooters. Oh guys got some handles. Girls got some handles.

Oh we got this. We got that. Oh we got s**t talkers. Oh we got brawls. Only thing missing is the dunk.

I’m telling you. Bro you dunking again. Man trust me in the change.”

As someone who has won championships and become a popular athlete. And someone worth over $500 million; Shaq may know a thing or two. But what do you think? Would dunks improve the WNBA?
