SEGA Celebrates 65 Years of Iconic Gaming

Where does the time go? While many think of PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo when it comes to gaming. We can’t forget the phenomenon that had the industry at one point in an absolute chokehold; especially when it came to a very speedy, furry blue creature. Nevertheless, raise a controller and wave your calloused thumbs in honor of SEGA celebrating 65 years of iconic gaming.

Yes, back in 1960 this legendary brand got its start. Today, we simply say SEGA. However, back then this entity began as “Service Games.” SEGA was just an abbreviation; taking the first two letters of the two words and combining them together.

Nevertheless, this gaming company that started off (in lore) as just being used on a slot machine went on eventually to find success especially in home entertainment. Its most popular game was Sonic the Hedgehog. The Sonic franchise has sold over 1.66 billion units and downloads, including both physical copies and free-to-play games. This includes the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and various other entries and re-releases.

But SEGA also had a large plethora of sports games for gamers to enjoy. Some being:

  • NHL ‘94
  • Sports Talk Baseball
  • NBA Jam T.E.
  • Tecmo Super Bowl
  • WWF Royal Rumble
  • ATP Tour Championship Tennis
  • Bill Walsh College Football ‘95
  • NFL Football ’94 Starring Joe Montana
  • Madden NFL ‘95
  • International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
  • PGA Tour Golf III
  • Andre Agassi Tennis
  • John Madden Football ’93
  • Greatest Heavyweights
  • NBA Live
  • College Slam

We could go on and on. But time does not permit. However, as one can see, SEGA back in the day had motion and helped facilitate getting sports games into the hands of kids and gamers everywhere.
