Seattle Seahawks Released Veteran Safeties

NFL teams continue to make moves during free agency and yesterday more moves were effected. The Seattle Seahawks released two of their veteran safeties, Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs. According to NFL Insider Tom Pelissero, these moves will save $27.5 million in cash and significant cap space for the Seahawks. Saving salary cap space and cash is the name of the game in free agency so the moves aren’t surprising. It appears new head coach, Mike Macdonald, is looking to build his own defense. The two safeties have been in the Seattle defensive backfield together since 2020. However, Adams did not play a full season during the four year period.

The New York Jets drafted Adams in 2017 where he played for three seasons. In 2020 he was traded to the Seahawks and was with them for four seasons. However, some critics say that Adams was only good at blitzing off the edge but was not effective in coverage. During his NFL career he’s had 4 interceptions and 36 passes defended. However, Adams has been injury plagued the last four seasons only playing in 22 games. At 28 years old and his best seasons behind him we’ll see if he gets any interest from other teams.

Quandre Diggs was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2015 and spent 5 seasons with the team. In 2019 he was traded to the Seahawks and has spent 5 seasons with them. He started every game of the last four seasons, was a two-time captain, and made the Pro Bowl from 2020-2022. In addition, he had three or more interceptions in each of his first four seasons, continuing a streak he started in Detroit and making him the first safety since Ed Reed to have three or more interceptions in six straight seasons.

It seems like at 31, Diggs may still have something left in the tank. If he wants to continue playing isn’t known at this point. However, with all the movement going on I wouldn’t be surprised if he receives some interest.

On a side note, Quandre is not related to the Digss brothers, Stefon and Trevon. However, he is the half-brother of Quentin Jammer, the former San Diego Chargers cornerback.
