It started with exercising the fifth-year option for both him and cornerback Devon Witherspoon. They were the team’s two first-round picks of the 2023 NFL Draft. Making this move allowed them to keep both players while working towards a long-term extension. Such a thing has come to pass so far for one of them. The Seattle Seahawks made Jaxon Smith Njigba the highest paid wide receiver after his astounding 2025 season. Smith was taken with the 20th pick in the draft while Witherspoon was the fifth pick. Both players have made a tremendous impact on the organization. But it is Smith who has garnered his extension first.
Multiple outlets have reported that the Seahawks agreed to terms with Smith on a four-year, $168.6 million extension. Which means he will average $42.15 annually edging out Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase by almost $2 million. The former Ohio State Buckeye will also receive more than $120 million guaranteed that is also a record among wide receivers. Seattle had cleared out their receiver room by letting go D K Metcalf and Tyler Lockett allowing Smith to spread his wings and become the top dog. And his season last year proved that without a doubt.
Smith earned unanimous first-team All-Pro honors and won Offensive Player of the Year. Winning over other great players such as Christian McCaffrey and Puka Nacua. He was only the second Seahawk to win OPOY since Shaun Alexander did it in 2005. And he set a franchise record with 1,793 receiving yards in the regular season, which also led the NFL. Plus, he earned Pro-Bowl honors in 2024 and 2025. Of course, he played a major role in helping Seattle get to and win Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California.

Getting Smith signed to an extension helps ensure the Seahawks remain a powerhouse in the NFL. Now they need to do the same for Devon Witherspoon who has been a force to reckon with on the defensive side of the ball. Nevertheless, with quarterback Sam Darnold having an offensive weapon like Smith on the roster his job will be a lot less difficult. So, congratulations to Jaxon Smith-Njigba for becoming the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL!
But who knows how long that will last with the NFL salary cap increasing again for the new season. It’s not a question of if but how long will he retain the title. There is sure to be another receiver to come and take away the title. Such as division rival Puka Nacua of the Los Angeles Rams.
