“Scary Terry” McLaurin And Washington Commanders Agreed To Three-Year Extension
After much frustration and anxiety by Commanders’ and fantasy football fans, things have finally been settled. His hold-in has come to an end and he will be able to suit up for the start of the 2025 NFL season. That’s because “Scary Terry” McLaurin and the Washington Commanders have agreed to a three-year contract extension. This deal was a long time coming and caused McLaurin to express that he was pretty frustrated with the negotiation process.
McLaurin had arrived late to training camp on July 27. Then was put on the physically unable to perform list. Thereafter, McLaurin requested a trade due to stalled contract talks. However, the Commanders had no interest in honoring that request. Nevertheless, as reported by ESPN, McLaurin was fined $200,000 for missing the first four days of training camp. He already had been fined $104,768 for missing the mandatory three-day minicamp in June.
But in spite of all the bad vibes that were brewing the two sides finally worked out a deal. NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported Monday that McLaurin and the Commanders have agreed to terms on a three-year extension worth up to $96 million. Pelissero added that McLaurin’s extension includes a $30 million signing bonus. That’s pretty good for the 76th overall pick of the third-round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
McLaurin has spent his entire six year career with the Commanders and has been their most consistent offensive player. This despite going through 11 starting quarterbacks, three full-time head coaches, three franchise names and a change of ownership. Part of the issue with getting the deal done was McLaurin’s age, 29. He was entering the final season of a three-year $69.6 million contract signed in 2022. He will be 31, when the new extension begins.

Having Jayden Daniels as the quarterback has been a boost. Together they and the Commanders went 12-5 for the franchise’s first winning season since 2016. And advanced to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991. He has had two Pro Bowl appearances and has surpassed 1,000 yards for five consecutive seasons.
McLaurin had one of his best statistical seasons in 2024 in his first season working with Daniels. He caught 82 passes on 117 targets for 1,096 yards and set a career-high with 13 touchdowns, which also broke a single-season record for the most receiving scores by a Washington wideout and was second in the NFL behind Cincinnati Bengals’ receiver Ja’Marr Chase. No doubt they will want to recreate that magic for the 2025 season.
In the meantime, congratulations to Terry McLaurin on securing his third NFL contract!
