San Francisco Snatched Super Bowl Dreams From the Lions

The Lions were hosted by the 49ers and they came in with a full head of steam. Detroit was clicking on all cylinders looking to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in their house. But San Francisco snatched Super Bowl dreams from the Lions in a spectacular comeback.

San Francisco deferred the toss and Detroit took advantage. After a couple runs and a pass Jameson Williams ran for 42 tough yards to get the touchdown. It was the 2nd-longest rushing TD by a WR in NFL playoff history. And the 4th-longest rush by a WR in NFL postseason history.

San Francisco then moved the ball down the field but Detroit tightened up their defense. San Francisco went for the field goal but missed it wide right. On the next drive it was the Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs show. Goff was hitting on most of his throws. Gibbs was putting together consistent runs picking up respectable gains. David Montgomery finished off the drive with a one yard touchdown.

Christian McCaffrey said enough and did some of his signature angry running. In addition to catching a 28 yard pass from Purdy, he finished the drive with a 2 yard touchdown. But on their next possession Purdy was intercepted by Malcolm Rodriguez. After connecting with LaPorta and the St. Brown, Goff connected with Gibbs for the 15 yard touchdown.

But Detroit wasn’t finished. Their defense forced a three & out and a punt, not allowing the 49ers to score at the end of the half. Instead Detroit kicked another field goal and went into halftime leading 24-7. But the 49ers flipped the switch in the second half. They scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter.

As he’s done all season, Dan Campbell went for 4th down instead of attempting the field goal. That decision shifted the momentum of the game. It’s what allowed the 49ers to get confidence and take the lead. In the fourth quarter Campbell again went for it on fourth down and it failed. San Francisco scored a touchdown and Detroit couldn’t recover.

They scored a touchdown in the last minute to cut the lead to three. However, the Lions couldn’t recover the onside kick and the 49ers closed out the game, winning it 31-34. It was a heck of a season for the Lions and their fans. But the 49ers proved they are a championship caliber team. Now they will face the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Time to party!
