San Francisco Giants Sign Matt Chapman for $54 Million

San Francisco Giants Sign Matt Chapman for $54 Million-3 Years

It’s been a very quiet offseason but things are heating up as we inch ever closer to Opening Day baseball. The latest? Well, there’s one guy that manager Bob Melvin has had in mind and he’s going to get him. The San Francisco Giants sign Matt Chapman for $54 Million / 3 Years deal.

The contract still affords Chapman some wiggle room. Especially, if he comes to feel there is a better fit for himself elsewhere. The agreement includes a couple of opt-outs; allowing both sides to feel comfortable with this deal.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan also confirms the early reports from sports journalists Heyman and Nightengale that a contract was on the way for Chapman. Regarding the Giants news Passan states,

“Third baseman Matt Chapman and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a three-year, $54 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Chapman will receive opt-outs after each of the first two seasons.”

Nice. Moreover, Matt is sure to feel quite “at home.” This deal will lead to a nice little reunion between him and skipper Bob Melvin. The two are familiar with each other from when they were among the Oakland Athletics organization.

Furthermore, San Francisco had a real need for improving their roster and lineup. During 2023 the team finished at four games under .500 and missed the playoffs. For an organization that has won three World Series in 2010, 2012, and 2014; those results are just not acceptable. Therefore, the front office got busy; hiring Melvin, then brought in a few other key players. Jung Hoo Lee and Chapman.

The San Francisco Chronicle mentions more of Chapman’s contract details; and also why the Giants targeted Matt in the first place. They reveal,

The contract includes opt outs after the 2024 and 2025 seasons with Chapman set to earn $20 million this season, $18 million in 2025 and $16 million in 2026.

The two-time Platinum Glove winner will reunite with Bob Melvin, his former manager during his five seasons with the Oakland A’s, and bolster a roster in need of some pop and stability within the infield defense. The expectation is for Chapman, 30, to play third base and not move to shortstop, which puts presumed third baseman JD Davis in flux.

So then, the Giants are doing some moving and shaking. The 2024 season is just about upon us, so more decisions are going to happen at a more rapid pace. Especially, as teams finish getting set for the long season ahead. Yes, it’s time to play ball.
