He was considered a premier part of their core group of guys that could help them win their sixth Lombardi Trophy. Whether that happens remains to be seen. But one thing for sure is that one part of that core will be gone. Because the San Francisco 49ers are trading Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. Samuel had requested permission to seek a trade early in February which was granted.

The trade didn’t cost the commanders much as they will be giving San Francisco a fifth round draft pick. Last year many believed that the team could have gotten at least a fourth round pick for the wide receiver. However, his production last season was not what it had been since he signed his contract extension during the 2022 offseason. And he had a lot of dropped balls in the 2024 season despite saying he wasn’t being targeted enough. However, he became the first wide receiver in NFL history with 20 TD receptions and 20 TD runs last season.

This trade will cost the 49ers $31.55 million in dead money. Indicating that they don’t believe Samuel is the player he once was. It also signals that they are willing to change their team-building philosophy when it comes to keeping the core of the team together. As they finished the 2024 season as the oldest team in the NFL, granting the 29-year old Samuel his trade request made sense. But not to be too harsh, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Samuel going to the Washington Commanders could prove to be a good thing for their young franchise quarterback.

Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels had an incredible rookie season. Playing like a seasoned quarterback remaining unflappable in the most critical times. Of course the trade won’t become official until the new league year starts on March 12. And on a side note the 49ers have indicated their willingness to trade their other wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. General manager John Lynch acknowledged this week that teams have also called the organization regarding his availability. His 2024 season ended when he suffered a torn ACL and MCL in the club’s Week 7 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. So buckle up 49ers fans, things are changing.
