San Francisco 49ers And Linebacker Fred Warner Agreed On Contract Extension
After a tumultuous offseason in 2024, the 49ers have made it a priority to sign some of their core players. Just last week they locked down their franchise quarterback Brock Purdy. And prior to that they came to terms with their star tight end George Kittle. Now it was the defense’s turn to get some love. And that happened yesterday when it was announced that the San Francisco 49ers and linebacker Fred Warner agreed to a contract extension.
It was such a good deal for Warner in that it made him the highest paid linebacker in the league. NFL Insider Adam Schefter provided more details about the extension:
“ESPN Sources: Four-time All-Pro LB Fred Warner and the 49ers reached agreement on a three-year, $63 million contract extension that includes over $56 million in guaranteed money that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid linebacker. It marks the second time in his seven-year NFL career that Warner has landed a contract that makes him the league’s highest-paid linebacker.”
How sweet it is for Warner to get contracts on two occasions making him the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL. That is a rare accomplishment given how difficult it is to get highly paid at least once during a player’s career.
But the 49ers definitely had the cap space to pay all three players as they had the second-highest salary cap space available. Only the New England Patriots had a higher salary cap space available. In fact, the extension signed by Kittle actually lowered the amount of his cap hit. And even after signing Kittle, Purdy and Warner Spotrac estimates that they still have about $43 million in cap space. Much of the cap space is due to the loss of several players such as Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward and the trade of Samuel Deebo.

Signing Warner was important as he has been a steadfast part of the defense for years. According to NFL.com, Warner has accumulated 897 tackles, 15 forced fumbles, 10 sacks and 10 interceptions over the course of his seven-year career. He owns a three-year streak of being recognized as both a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro, having earned each distinction four times overall.
Now that the 49ers have key players signed they have avoided all the offseason drama that happened last year. But have they done enough to improve the team? Especially after being ravaged by injuries and a disappointing season. And they haven’t added very many free agents to the roster either. We’ll find out when the regular season begins in less than four months. In the meantime, congratulation to Fred Warner on his new contract extension.
