San Francisco 49ers and George Kittle Agreed To Contract Extension

Just recently Shedeur Sanders was drafted in the fifth round despite being projected as a first round pick. Now he’ll have to prove he has what it takes to become an NFL success. Well another guy was once a fifth round pick and he has more than proven his worth in the league. In fact, his contributions to the team were just recently recognized. After not initially showing up for voluntary workouts, the San Francisco 49ers and George Kittle agreed to a contract extension.

As was posted by Adam Schefter, Done deal: 49ers six-time Pro-Bowl TE George Kittle has signed a four-year, $76.4 million contract extension that includes $40 million guaranteed, as he told @BussinWTB.” Schefter also pointed out that: “Last season George Kittle became one of five tight ends in league history to have four or more 1,000-yard receiving seasons, alongside Travis Kelce (seven), Rob Gronkowski, Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten (four each).”

Kittle was selected in the fifth round with the 146th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He was part of John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan’s very first draft class and went on to become a 49ers fan favorite. Kittle also became famous for running over and through defenders. While at the same time being a dependable pass catcher for the quarterback. General manager John Lynch described Kittle this way:

“In 2017, our first year with the 49ers, we selected a skinny tight end from Iowa whom we were really excited about. We had high hopes, but no one knew that he would become the player that he is today,” president of football operations and general manager John Lynch said. “George’s leadership, enthusiasm for the game, for his teammates, and the Faithful are truly unique and special. He is an outstanding representation for the 49ers on the field and is an outstanding representative for the organization off the field with his investment in the local and military communities. He has a great sense of pride in his role and has put in the work to be one of the best tight ends in the NFL.”

With his new extension, Kittle is now the league’s highest paid tight end at $19.1 million per year. That’s just enough to surpass Trey McBride who is at $19 million per year. However, Kittle has worked hard to serve the military community resulting in winning the NFL’s Salute to Service Award presented by USAA in 2024. He has launched a podcast platform with his family to amplify veteran stories. And created a free mental health app for veterans, contributed over $250,000 to military nonprofits.

Extending Kittle was a great move on and off the field for the 49ers. And now he’ll stay in the Bay for years to come. Congrats George Kittle!
