San Diego State Aztecs Basketball Extends Coach Brian Dutcher
The San Diego State Aztecs just got their biggest victory of the season. And this time it is occurring off the court. They are scoring big by reaching an agreement with their stellar coach. Yes, San Diego State Aztecs Basketball extends Coach Brian Dutcher for 4 additional years.
After taking the Aztecs to the NCAA Tournament Championship game last season (2023); there was speculation about how long Coach Brian Dutcher would stick around the Mesa. Well those questions have been answered emphatically as Mark Ziegler of the San Diego Union Tribune, reports that SDSU has locked up their Head Basketball Coach, and fan favorite, Brian Dutcher for 4 more seasons after this season.
The new deal increases Coach Dutcher’s salary this season from 1.4 million to 2.3 million with raises continuing each year through the 2027-2028 season when he will make 2.7 million. The contract ups his buyout from 3 million to 10.2 million, possibly discouraging other basketball programs from trying to steal him away.
Moreover, Dutcher seems excited to continue his work with the Aztecs. He’s loved every moment thus far, and looks forward to the future. Plus, he’s thankful for this new contract extension. Brian mentions,
“I’m very appreciative that President (Adela) de la Torre and (Athletic Director) John David Wicker have allowed me to continue to coach at a place I love and have spent the past 25 years. Along with my assistant coaches and friend Steve Fisher, we have built a high-major basketball program at San Diego State…
I never got into coaching for the money and was an assistant coach until I was 58 years old. I’m grateful for every day I can mentor such outstanding young men.”

What a guy. Moreover, despite the pay increases (which he truly deserves); Coach Dutcher is still a bargain, ranking 54th nationally in college basketball coaching salaries. Athletic Director John David Wicker acknowledged this saying:
“We are definitely getting a very economical deal,” Wicker said. “We’re very appreciative Brian was willing to work with us on that because I’m sure he could go other places and make significantly more money.”
Furthermore, Ziegler states that according to rumors Ohio State and West Virginia had already looked into Coach Dutcher’s availability. And why wouldn’t they? Coach Dutcher just wins… having achieved a record of 172-52 as a Head Coach. A whopping .768 winning percentage.
Nevertheless, Brian’s heart is in San Diego. Dutcher says, “I love San Diego. Both my girls went to San Diego State. They both live here. I have a granddaughter here. This is home now.”
San Diego State Basketball fans feel the same way. Great town, great school. Moreover, it’s nice to see Brian Dutcher continuing with the Aztecs presently and in the coming years.
