San Diego Padres Had Huge Comeback As Pitcher Stephen Kolek Made Obscure History

It was only the first inning and things were not going well for the pitcher. It was especially surprising as he had pitched a complete game shutout against the Colorado Rockies a few days prior. But last night that shutout seemed like a long time ago. Because what was happening in the first inning of the game against the Marlins was brutal. Nevertheless, the San Diego Padres had a huge comeback as pitcher Stephen Kolek made obscure history.

But before we get to the history part, it’s important to know that the Padres were down six runs to none in the very first inning. And what’s worse is that Kolek’s pitching wasn’t terrible. However, seven of the first eight batters hit ground balls. Only one resulted in an out. Also, Manny Machado made a decision to throw to home instead of first base which resulted in a run. To add insult to injury the Marlins kept hitting ground balls that evaded the Padres. Thereby running up the score.

Through all of this, manager Mike Schildt, left Kolek in the game. His reasoning on the matter was: “At some point, they’ve got to hit it at somebody, right?” said manager Mike Shildt. I suppose that’s correct, but that kind of thinking wrecks havoc on the fans who just want the bleeding to stop. So, after facing 10 Marlins hitters, Kolek escaped the first. And the comeback commenced. Slugger Fernando Tatis, Jr got the party started hitting a home run, his fourth lead off home run of the season.

“In that dugout, when we went down six runs in the first inning, all of us knew that we were going to come back one way or the other,” said Fernando Tatis Jr. “We were just going to find a way.”

The Padres went on to score two runs in both the second and third, then one in both the fourth and fifth. Arraez and Xander Bogaerts pounded out three hits, and Jackson Merrill provided some insurance with a solo home run in the eighth inning.

But besides that ridiculous comeback, as we mentioned Kolek created a bit of history. As reported by ClutchPoints:

According to AJ Cassavell, who covers the Padres for MLB, mentioned that Kolek is the first starting pitcher since Mark Buehrle in 2006 to allow six runs in the first inning and earn a win. He is also the first pitcher since Bartolo Colon in 1999 to earn all six of those runs and earn a win.

So despite the terrible start, Kolek ended up with the win and a note in the history books. Not bad for a day’s work.
